Some people asserted that working from home by using computers and other electronic equipment is far better than sitting in the traditional office. It is indeed that working at home may sound relaxing and free of pressure. However, I could hardly agree with it. I have several reasons for my point of view.
First, although it is more comfortable for the employees to work at home using laptops, but it is not necessarily true for the employer. If all of the workers are at home, how could manager take control of the working progress? How does the boss know behind the computer screen what is going on about the assignment? What if the important commercial secrets emits because of the loose control? After the continuous questions, you may reach the point that it is really difficult for the management to check the working assignment and their commercial security under the total "at-home-working" situation.
Second, not all of the jobs are suitable for the long-distance working format. For instance, dancers, performers, singers, waitresses, safeguards, and policemen. Those positions require employees to fulfill their duties face-to-face and directly. Thus it is unrealistic to suppose that policemen directing traffics at home laying on their beds. Working at home only works for those technical positions, which you could do independently without too much communication and direct involvement, like graphic design, painting, data analysis and so on.
Additionally, working at home may sound nice, but in fact workers usually work overtime without notice. For example, one of former classmates is a graphic designer now. We always admire her with such an artistic title, sadlly, she can't agree with our opinion. According to her words, she often workes overtime even overnight just in order to meet the deadlines. There are always some days in every month she could hardly sleep but works on her painting nonstop. Therefore, next time when your boss suggests that you may take your assignment home or you may just stay home to do it, don't be too happy, because you will have an even tougher time ahead.
In conclusion, due to the difficulty of management and the even harder working assignment, I don't think working from home would be a better idea as the assertion suggests. Additionally, to some jobs, it is totally impossible to take home their works, such as policemen, professional dancers, and waitresses, due to the characteristics of the positions. |
