"The purpose of education should be to provide students with a value system, a standard, a set of ideas--not to prepare them for a specific job."


Today, many people have misunderstood the essence of our education. They just view it as the main approach to get certain job skills in this technologically advanced society. However, we have to assert that the time-honored task of education is not only to prepare our students to funtion in our society through some specific job related skills, but also has to transmit the sound intellectual and moral values to them. To a great degree, the aim of education should be to offer students a value stystem,a set of ideas as well as some basic specific job skills.

No one can seriouly argue that our society can survive without some standards and judgements of morality and values even though there are not definitive concepts about these in the world. We need an education involving a value system, a standard, a set of ideas to form our students' character. This formation of intellectual and moral standards and judgements are of central importance to their future development. Many scientists in history are devoted to their careers to find the scientific truth throughout their life. For example, Galileo gave his precious life as a sacrifice to purchase the truth; Edison tried thousands of times of experiment to find the proper material of the bulb ,and etc. What did they ask for? Money?Status?Or the whole world's appreciation? None, they were somewhat crazy for their careers merely on the purpose of their faith inside-----the enthusiasm in pursuing the real truth and making contribution to our whole human beings. These are just a few of the millions of examples we can call on. Thus, we can validate that it deserves our attention to clarify the basic purpose of the real education and persuade everyone that it is absolutely not only to obtain some specific job skills for securing a decent job in the future but also some confirmation inside. It should first provide our student with the main direction and the primary faith of their whole life .

Nevertheless, with the surprisingly increasing of our science and technology, also with the rapid mobility of job change, both the parents and our students are really frustrated about the future career. Sometimes, what all they want from an education is merely some basic job skills that are related to them. They only register some courses that they hope can parlay into jobs and higher-paying ones at that. They pay little attention to the development of their moral values and intellectual standards and ,what's more ,is that they even don't take courses such as classic and history because of the little relationship with their specific knowledges. Now it is easy for you to understand the high rates of today's teenage pregnancy, alcoholism, drug use, suicide etc. We are too young to be so goal-obsessed.

Admittedly, we are living in a society that is developing so rapidly everyday, so it is also important for education to act a unique role as a transmitting center delivering all kinds of science and technology to the students. Just as the old saying goes "Knowledge is power". Helping to obtain a level of specific skills is undeniable one of the primary tasks that education can give.

In sum, the goal of today's education should definitely be to provide both a value system, a standard, a set of ideas and some specific job skills. Knowing what is the best thing for us and for the whole society, at the same time obtaining certain specific skills, then you are on the road to success.
