It is very true that the arts expose some concealed and implicit thoughts and values of a society. Though it is mainly through official propaganda that the mainstream of ideas and values of a society is transmitted, there is a wide spectrum of thoughts and emotions which do not get expressed by any other means than arts. Moreover, what make arts stand out is that they are not exclusive to the governments therefore may deliver suppressed and implied ideas and feelings of common people.

This is especially true under some extreme conditions, such as in countries and areas which are absent or devoid of latitude. For example, in late 1930s and early 1940s, when China was invaded by Japan, many of the southern provinces were under the control of the Japanese army, where people, though craved for driving the invaders out of their own lands, may risk their lives saying out. During that period of time, poems, folktales, songs and other forms of art, which indicated people’s antagonizing to the enemy, were the main channels to awake, inspire and reconsolidate them to fight. The song "march of the militia", the forefather of China's national anthem, was secretly disseminated among Chinese people, and played an important role in bringing numerous patriots into the anti-Japan war. By the same token, in some less free and democratic places, people tend to express their discontentment and complaint implicitly by means of all kinds of forms of art. It is more likely the arts than governmental voices that depict us a true and complete picture of those types of societies.

In current societies, art is still an essential way for people to give their views on some sensitive social issues. Such issues as fornication and the use of drug may not be articulated by any official propaganda or fully debated in any public occasions. Nevertheless, we may find out some connotations in certain literary works, theatres and movies. For instance, in my country which is dominated by conservative and traditional values, homosexuality is for a long time a forbidden topic. Whereas, in 1999 a movie reflecting the inner world of buggers aroused an unprecedentedly wide discussion about the issue among common people and finally lead them to pay more attention and take an appropriate attitude to that covert and neglected minority.

Further, personal emotions are fully demonstrated chiefly, if not only, through various forms of art. One may look at the examplification of the Sunflower series paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, the world-famous Netherlandish post-impressionist. Besides the exquisite painting techniques he applied in them, the works are more noticed by their magical implication of the painter's momentary feelings and subtle moods. One masterpiece of the series, The Fourteen Sunflowers especially embodied a combination of his craving for life and helplessness of the reality that at the time he was approaching the end of his life. We may also find credence in our day-by-day life. Boys always count on love poems, songs and letters to deliver the deep feelings of their beloved girls. They are wise enough to see that arts are sometimes beyond words and behaviors in touching hearts.

To conclude, the arts such as painting, music and literature etc. deliver the aspirations of people under certain constraints, help express the true thinkings of contentious issues and expose our inner emotional world. They should not be neglected for their significance in revealing the otherwise hidden ideas and emotions.
