The arts (painting, music, literature, etc) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
I agree with the writer that ideas and impulses would be hidden , were it not for the help of arts ,in terms of painting ,music, literature ,etc. Art , to some extent, is a way though which one can freely express himself , his feelings and emotions, without giving any consideration to the outside world , and in this sense, art is merely a subjective matter. What makes sense to me in this point is that not everyone in this society could have the equal chance to speak out his own voice, and not every valuable idea could be appreciated by its contemporaries. So the existence of arts is fairly important .This is especially true in the world of literature and art.
People living under the control of an arbitrary government are deprived of the right to state his opinions which may be disadvantageous to the government. Progressive writers, sensitive to the changes in the whole society and the emptiness from which people suffer , are eager to point them out. However, they would be prosecuted in doing so .Then it is literature that they finally turn to. Just take a look at Xi You Ji, a famous Chinese novel written in Ming dynasty. At that period ,the government set up strict rules to control its people. There was no democracy, no liberty, and people should obey what the officers ordered ,or they would be punished relentlessly. Sun Wu Kong, hero of this novel, represented the oppressed people. He was rebellious, reluctant to be controled by the head of the God, which is the symbol of the government .So he fighted all the way to the Palace, though at last he failed. Suppose the writer had expressed his resentment to the government publicly , he would sure be punished . Under such circumstances , only though arts , literature especially ,can they express their opinions , which we now view as an indispensable part of the reflect of that time.
Moreover, ideas which we later find invaluable may simply be avoided by people of that period, for they may be too difficult to understand. Van Gogh , one of the greatest painter of 19th century , was so talented that his feelings and passions about life were beyond the understanding of his contemporaries. He was considered mad ,and was totally ignored. Until several years of his death, his ideas expressed in his painting began to be accepted ,and people are impressed about this .Thanks to the paintings , Van Gogh 's ideas can come to light , and we can know that there was once a gifted man with best hope for life.
Above all , art is something magical. It lasts more than its inventor , and is handed down from one generation to another as the teller of history, individual ideas that might otherwise be forgotten |
