Issue 225
"People often look for similarities, even between very different things, and even when it is unhelpful or harmful to do so. Instead, a thing should be considered on its own terms; we should avoid the tendency to compare it to something else."
Recently, people are interested in talking about the problem of whether we should look for similarities between differences (different) things. If there is one-- which I take leave to doubt--then it is created by those who have not (had)a full appreciation of the importance of comparison, not by those who have a better understanding of it and have got benefit from it. As far as I am concerned, I fervently believe that we should try our best to look for the similarities between different things through comparison..
First of all, looking for the similarities by comparison plays an important role in recognizing of one thing (in)itself(加上in是一个短语,不知道你的本意是否这样). Take SARS for example, SARS stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome which is a new infectious disease and is known of almost nothing (感觉这句话不通顺,再看看)about it. Fortunately , through comparison, specialist deduce it might be cause (caused)by a certain kind of virus, because the clinical material display that it bears the characteristics such as high(high what? ), low leukocytes count , accelerated ESR (erythrocyte sediment rate ) etc, which are according to (应该是被认为把)the manifestations of virus infection. With the increasing research in depth,(有这样的表达吗?) it is eventually sentenced to Coronvirus. This illustrates the point of how important it is to look for the similarities between different things. Inversely, if it were not for the help of looking for similarities, we should hardly, in some sense, discern and define one thing on its own terms.(感觉这个例子很贴切)
In addition, it is through comparison that we find similarities which instruct us to judge, to analyze, to ameliorate. As the president of Legend Group named LiuChuanzhi has once said, "Who can tell the differences (of differences 这种表达对吗?)between Mcdonalds' and Kentucky? The answer is (there is 更合适些)no difference, because all the things Mcdonalds' has considered has (been应该是被动时态吧。)thought over by the Kentucky, Vice Verse(vice versa). They both share the unshakable preponderance and status on the worldwide market of fast food. what make they so power(powerful) and potent is that they keep(cast their sight on looking for) look for similarities by comparing with each and improve their qualities on both food taste and service attitudes." Definitely, the comparison which results in discoveries of shortcomings through looking for similarities of one's powerful competitor exerts an paramount influence on propelling one individual or a group of individuals to make a great effort to get further development and (make) much more progress. Obviously, there is almost no the power (powerful) companies which never keep on comparing itself to its competitors.
Admittedly, looking for similarities may be unhelpful and harmful sometimes.(感觉这里应该强调过分追寻相似性有害) Every sword bears two blades. This is a world appealing for individual characteristic and diversities. Too much effort on looking for similarities would bring to tedious and monotonous society. Therefore, we should make comparison for similarities lead to colorless, cold community with no ideas but similar thought.
To sum up, taking into account what I have discussed above, we can easily draw the conclusion that the comparison between different things play a utilitarian role in defining on thing and in promoting progress. Without comparison, we would then become bogged down in the conservation and confusion. It is high time that we place certain emphasis on comparison, rather than exterminate this beneficial effort.
consider on its own terms.你的文章第一段指出相似性比较可以帮助人们认知事物的本质;
Good luck! |
