ISSUE99
In any realm of life—whether academic, social, business, or political—the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options.
23:22
The issue focuses on the classic dilemma between reality and ideal. Naturally, it seems that it is practical rather than idealistic point of view leads to success eventually as the speaker asserts. Admittedly, pragmatic behavior does great contributions to one's survival and success, however, I argue that idealistic views are of the equal, if not more, significance as realistic ones.
On one hand, it is true that success calls for the pragmatic behavior, without which success is just an illusion. There is an old saying (which I paraphrase); success is not made by dreams but by practice. Even if the ideal is fantastic, it will decay easily if there are no realistic actions to make it true. Take Utopia for example. Those who advocated the establishment of Utopia believed that Utopia would be the best society. Unfortunately, they did nothing but making dreams of a perfect living environment for human beings, and ignore some vital and practical problems which they would be confronted with in the process of founding Utopia. The failure of Utopia is a good lesson showing that without practical views one can hardly succeed, no matter how hard he/she tries.
On the other hand, ideal is usually compared to the lighthouse that guides people to navigate to where he/she desires to. Ideal gives one the courage and adherence to his/her dreams, and motivates people to endeavor to realize their dreams. Take Helen Kaler for example. Although blind, deaf and dumb, she never gives up the ideal to become a writer. She made every effort to realize her dream, even if she would suffer much more than others due to her disability. Consequently, she succeeded in turning her ideal into reality. Just imagine that without her adherence to ideal which seemed impossible at the very beginning, how could she become such a great writer today? Ideal gives rise to the belief in the success, the adherence to dreams, and the courage to keep on pursuing.
Fortunately, reality and ideal, however, are not mutually exclusive, thus it is totally possible to reconcile the two so that we may develop ourselves more effectively and beneficially. According to a survey conducted by several socialists in Greenwich University in Britain, over 80% of those who gained great achievements in various areas such as politics, art, science and business, have set up the goals of being outstanding at very early age, and then make every effort to achieve the goals. Almost all who have been interviewed owned their later excellence to the early dream to become outstanding. The later success of them can best illustrate the significance of combination of reality and ideal.
On balance, idealistic view is the motivation of one's future success, while practical action provides the possibility to realizing the ideal. Once set up an ideal, one should spare no efforts to turn it into reality. On the contrary, if indulged in ideal realm, one will get nothing but merely imagination.
