210"Most people choose a career on the basis of such pragmatic considerations as the needs of the economy, the relative ease of finding a job, and the salary they can expect to make. Hardly anyone is free to choose a career based on his or her natural talents or interest in a particular kind of work."
Nowadays, two camps arouse a drastic debate on the issue of how to choose a career. Based on pragmatic considerations? Or according to individual's natural talents or interest? In my point of view, the latter is favored for long-term perspective, though the former is common at present.
Admittedly, since considering many reasons, large amount of people choose their careers based on such pragmatic facts as the economic need, the ease, and the salary. Take Chinese miners for example, forced by the pressure to survive, they select the dangerous job at the risk of unpredictable hypogeal landslides. Those miners are also not willing to adventure with their lives, but they should earn money to support their families, which struggle at the line of poor. In society, among those people who favors cozy life and abominate hard work, ease is the most significant factor to choose a job. For these people, ease is first, while interest or talent is last. Once the job is cozy, they will ignore any other elements including interest and talent. And for those people who pursue aristocratic life, money is their intimated friends and is the aim for them to work. They highly prefer the company that provides more salary than others.
However, there is no doubt that for some people, interest and talents are their first consideration to choose a career. Take Van Gough, one of the most prestigious painters since now, for instance, he loves to paint on the canvas and insist on this career. Through his lifetime, he just paints for his own pleasure and never for economy, though he is poor. In China, Lu Xun, who is a famous writer for his claim of fighting with pens, works as same as Van Gough. As a doctor before, in order to change demos' minds, he gives up his original career and begins his life as a writer. Also, presently, myriad of volunteers serves at every field merely because of their interest. An English volunteer named Mary, who deserts her harmonious family and protects animals from deracinating in South Africa, explained that she took this activity only for her love of animals.
Moreover, scrutiny research reveals that, from the long views, it is irrational and absurd to choose a job on the consideration of some pragmatic reasons. We take the examples cited before into account to see how the conclusion reflects. Because of unexpected landslide and fire damp explosion, about 19 thousands of miners in China lose their lives in the mines. As a result, their families will trap into poor again, not to say ameliorating their livings. Followed this, let us come into the second example. There is an old saying "No pains, no gains". Therefore, those people who choose a job on the basis of ease will reach their failure ultimately.
On the contrary, those individuals who select jobs according their interest and talent are more easily to achieve their success. Van Gough's works refresh the highest price of paintings in auction once by once. Lu Xun bequeaths a great number of thoughtful books to offspring, which are beneficial to both juveniles and adults. At Mary’s care, African lions survive and propagate more and more now. From these, we can draw a conclusion that interest is beneficial to one's work.
To sum up, interest plays an important role in life and activates person to success, while some pragmatic considerations are merely short sighted. To be a prestigious person, we should choose our career on the basis of interest and talents. |
