1. this is not a news that UCL CS > Math in QF side.......one edvience: see how long had their financial computing MSc had been and the Fina Math MSc one had been........
2. 非欧一律不给funding <---- this is a norm already, it is very difficult to get funding as an international student (not impossible but very competitive)
=> the key point now is not which research group you are in: it is somehow depends on luck. just like one won't know (and won't care) which bank one will work for after graduation. The most important point is to get a good enough grade, and good enough reference letter (a bit too realistic; understand it as well known by the professors there and have good enough research experience) such that one can get into the door.
Whatever Imperial, UCL, LSE, (or KCL or ...), London is not that big, and the industry is not that big. the QF working professionals, and the professors are very likely to know each other......and at the end whatever LSE Fina Math, UCL Fina Math, Imperial Fina Math are just both competiting for the very similar pool of opportunity.....(and indeed one should add Oxbridge and Warwick in also........most role are in London anyway; maybe even X, Paris VI........)
as a fresh graduate, especially for someone don't have a decent undergraduate college and don't have excellent internship experience, one cannot afford to be that selective in the first role.
not to mention that PE (and indeed buy side in general) seldom hire fresh graduate......
i.e. dream less and wake up.
(again, nothing is impossible, and thus it is not a problem to list it as plan A......but you need plan B, C, D, E afterwards....)
P.S. e.g. you get a risk role in a IB, you are working there not for the name of the IB only, but more for the nature of the role - get some hand-on experience, work a couple of year and then find something you want more. the job nature (thus division) you are in matters much more then the name of the company.
yes and no.
no: I did not think of the possibility of not able to find an internship (but this of course exist, and not a small one). and I do mean that finding a internship is very very important indeed.....else how can you stay and pay back the tuition?
yes: yup.......you are right also....you also need some backup plan if back China, but there're not much you can do for this now anyway.
