why not apply for some Policy programs ? I think that's your best fit.

Thank you very much!
I'll consider to apply for pp program next year if not admitted this year.

POLICY/POLITICS...

我目前只有关注到雪城的econ phd(我也不确定申请难度,也许完全是我能力不及,求轻拍哈)。

For any PhD in economics department,  please kindly list out ur grade in:
Calculus III, aka multivariate calculus
Linear algebra
Calculus based probability
Proof based statistics
Intermediate micro
Intermediate macro
Econometrics

If u lack any one of them,  it will be a hard time to apply for any academics econ master,  not to mention PhD

P.S. what i mean is indeed....also forget econ phd with policy focus.  Their math requirement is slightly lower but still sounds higher than what u have.

我没有找到这部分,只是看到他们说到“Applications from all interested individuals are welcome. Current graduate students have varied undergraduate backgrounds, including economics, other social sciences, and mathematics. Completion of a master's degree in economics is not required to enter a Ph.D. program, and most students do not obtain an M.A. degree before entering the Ph.D. program.”

1. Of course they welcome application from all field.........because it is application fee from all fields.

"Emerging graduate students should have had at least a year of calculus, a course in mathematical statistics, and a course in linear algebra."

This is only the bare minimum requirement for admission, and most student have more than this since admission is competitive.
Not to mention most Chinese / non-Western student have way more than the average.

P.S. On the softer side of economics, what is relevant can be some social science stuffs, e.g. law, politics.
A Chinese education on these discipline are way more weaker than the US counterparty from the Western point of view (in average) due to political / value /education system difference, especially when compared to the difference in mathematics education.

2. It is quite that US students go to PhD directly after their Bachelor without any master, since the US top students had already engaged into some research project during their senior years, and able to get strong recommendation letter from a US professors (from the desired field, i.e. economics ---> economics, phy ---> phy).

This is not the case for those outside US (unless one can find strong reference that has connection in some US school, which is very likely in the same filed).

3. If you want to do a PhD in any economics department, make up your quantitative background first. Mainstream economics use mathematics as their language.
You need at least one more degree for proving this.

4. Even you are going on the more applied / policy side of it, they still use a lot of econometrics to support the stuffs empirical. It is not necessarily that you have to know all the statistical tools, but at least you have master quite some of them, and show that you have such potential to learn the rest, i.e. show them your grade in some UG statistics course like mathematical statistics, probability, econometrics, time series and etc... are very useful.

5. I will doubt if you GPA are good enough to support you for a PhD also. I mean a PhD in the same field as your bachelor and master. Of course I don't have enough information to judge, so just a doubt.

Dear Cheesechan,
Thank you very much! It is so nice of you to confirm the math requirement of this program for me, and thank you for your insightful opinions. I now understand that without further study in math, I am basically not qualified for any econ PhD program (or even ma program).

I used to think that at least I received legal training from different jurisdictions (mainland china, Taiwan and UK), which could be useful for some policy oriented research and enable me to get into some econ PhD programs. As long as I survive the first year’s study I’ll be doing my dissertation, which could have an interdisciplinary topic.

However, I didn’t pay attention to the widely and intense application of math in econ study, which is also the hardcore requirement for judging applicants. Neither did I know how u.s. professors evaluate Chinese education of social science, including Law.

So I want to thank you for these answers. I’ll just stop struggling for this year’s application in econ PhD and try to gather more info about pp and be prepared. Thank you! I really appreciate your help.

Some remarks.

1. I am not in public policy myself, so I may be wrong......but as far as I know, public policy stuffs has a lower mathematics requirement in general, and I guess you should try it.

2. I believe that a legal training is very useful in social science research, but for economics, legal alone is not enough. They talk in numbers.

3. I am not quite sure about applied economics, or agricultural economics departments. But I guess they still need more mathematics than you have.

4. With no university maths training before, it is next to impossible to survive the 1st year of a econ PhD. Have a look in MWG (Microeconomic Theory by Andreu Mas-Colell, Michael D. Whinston and Jerry R. Green, a common PhD micro core textbook) and have a taste of it.

5. Law may be better......well, as least better than those doing politics I guess....(P.S. imagine what they will think about doing legal study in a country that is ruled by man instead of law.....of course this can be a biased view, but a biased view need time and evidence to counter it.)

6. Normally, it is not a problem at all to go from the former to the later, but way more difficult in the reverse direction: math, stat, econ, policy.

Thank you sooooooo much!
Never imagined I could get this much useful information within only 2-3days!
I'll be working on these suggestions in the following months, and hopefully to get into a program 17 fall. (Either ma or PhD) I'll probably encounter other problems in the future, which I would keep adding to this post. It would be my honor to receive further suggestions from you.
Thank you again for all your answers to me. Have a nice weekend! :)
