The first time I got in touch with computer was during my childhood years, and I was deeply appealed to this giant “electrical toy”. In the following years, my connections with computer became even stronger. I had attempted to compile some simple programs, for example, the Gluttonous Snake game, during my middle school years, and got many rewards back as I took part in programming contests later on. Entering college, I proactively sat in some computer subjects and fully immersed myself in this fascinating world. May 2016, as a junior college student, I assisted Professor Weiwei Wang in the project of Designing Pipeline RISC CPU, with the goals being designing a data path and a controller for the processor. As part of a team, I was mainly responsible for reducing the effects of

data hazards that were caused by pipelining, to which I contributed a great deal of time and efforts. Finding that the usually employed method, bypass algorithm, was unable to largely reduce the cost, I then searched for a vast ocean of materials before deciding to use Tomasulo, a kind of dynamic scheduling algorithm, to prevent the pause of pipelines to the maximum degree. However, another problem, the mismatching problem between processor and memory, occurred. To solve this problem, I self-learned the page replacement algorithm and added a cache to the system based on the self-adapting page replacement algorithm, which realized the function of detecting the access patterns dynamically and choosing the most suitable replacement algorithm without artificial

intervention. My efforts helped to realize a 30% increase in the cache accuracy performance, an accomplishment that I feel highly proud of. Now, we are sorting our research outcomes, which are expected to be published in a core journal.
After completing that project, I soon got involved in the Summer Research Training Program and worked on a project named Vehicle License Plate Recognition System based on CUDA. As for my part, the most difficult task was to identify the character recognition. To

offer satisfactory solutions, I applied Support Vector Machine (SVM) learning algorithm to character recognition process. A twice recognition was also applied to tell apart similar characters such as number “0” and letter “D”. To solve the time cost for training SVM model caused by the Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO) training algorithm, I creatively brought in the CUDA architecture and planted SMO parallel (P2SMO) algorithm on the platform of CUDA, which helped to increase the efficiency of the SMO algorithm. Moreover, I made modification to the P2SMO by taking into account of the rapid convergence conditions and the changes of kernel function cache table access strategy. Based on these efforts, I achieved a satisfactory result as the parallel algorithm speed realized rapid progress, almost ten times of its equivalent, and the recognition accuracy reaching up to 90.12% in the test. Our research achievements eventually won the Excellent Scientific Research Project Award of Zhejiang University. During the process, I comprehensively employed the knowledge in machine learning, computer architecture, image processing, and became more skilled in realizing the parallel computing of CPU and GPU.

Department of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd, and was selected to join the project of Designing and Implementing Distributed Memory File Caching System. Our research team discovered that there existed a large amount of physical memory that could not be completely

pool and promote the entire execution efficiency. For me, I am mainly responsible for the functions of file storage distribution service, free memory supervision, as well as distribution forecast. I combined both LRU replacement algorithm and global updating for the pheromone module to minimize the system consumption and to maximize the authenticity of the module simultaneously.
After comparing the performance of distributed memory file caching system and the disk read performance via NFS, I found that the former realized a 200% jump in file throughput capacity in the computer cluster connected by Ethernet. From this project, I became aware of the significance of distributed storage in enhancing the overall working efficiency and became more determined to become a proficient in the area of computer architecture. Driven by this ambition, I declined the promising job offer from Huawei and decided to
