ARGUMENT140
140The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."
------------------------------
提纲:1.largest classes does not contribute to her popular
2.attraceted grants can not demonstrate her research ability
3.can not simply get her promotion, other fators should be considered
The report of the committee on Faculty promotions and Salaries at Elm City University recommends that they should raise Professor Thomas' salary and promote her to be the Department Chairperson. To substantiate this conclusion, the arguer notes that Professor Thomas' classes are among the largest at the university which showing her welcome among students. The arguer also points out that she successfully brought the research grant to the university which amount exceed her salary in each of the last two years. This argument rests on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions, and is therefore unpersuasive as it stands.
In the first place, the reasoning that Professor Thomas is popular among students and hence is a talented teacher because her classes are among the largest in the university is open to doubt. The professor may be a popular teacher among students because of her wisdom dialogue, attractive way of instructing, or her wide range of knowledge. So many students enjoying attending her classes, later, her classes are among the largest in the university. But we can not draw a conclusion from the above message. Maybe she just teach a fundemental course that demands almost every student to take, for example, mathematics or statistics. Many students attend her courses do not show correlation with her talent in teaching and popular among students.
Second, the fact that Professor Thomas attracted some research grants does not necessarily mean that she have the strong research ability in her field. Research in a field and make great progress and breakthrough is not a easy task to achieve. In most times, there should be a work of group. Many specialists work together and then successfully get the research grants. Though Professor Thomas may be too competitive to attractive to obtain grants. Further information is needed to support the arguer's claim.
Finally, even Professor Thomas are deserved to be promoted. There are other factors must be considered first. As we all know, professors are very common in the university, almost everyone has his/her own speciality and make contributions more or less in his/her field. It is very difficult to evaluate whose contributions are greater than other. But there should be a certain Department Chairperson which means that this professor maybe a leader or manager in this field. In order to promote and raise her salary, the arguer should give us strong support to assure her outstanding ability in the university.Last but not least, the univesity should reconsider its situation whether to make her promotion.
In sum, the recommendation is not well supported. To bolster(支持) it, the arguer should tell us more about Professor Thomas, her teaching and research ability, her relationship with faculty and students, her contributions for the university, etc. |
