'An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism.'

In this argument, the arguer suggest to use Ichthaid, an nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, to reduce the absences in school and work on the basis that absences are always given by people for a leave and a fact that people in East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, visit  doctors less times for treartments of colds. Though well presented and seemingly logical at first glance, the arguer's statement can hardly stand up to any further scrutiny for its several apparent flaws.

To begin with, the arguer unwarranted assums that the people in East Meria are less likely to get illness due to the high consumption of fish. However, it is not   necessarily the case. First, no evidence indicates that fish is bought by the local people and eaten during their meal time,  perhaps East Meria is a famous fish export harbor, most of their fishes are sold to others and the local people are not  fond of eating fish. What's more, granted that they have fish in their diets, the arguer still unjustifibly considers there is a causal relationship between eating fish and getting less colds. But the mere fact that people visit the doctor noly once or twice per year for the treatment of colds serves as insufficient evidence. Comon sense tells us that only the colds become very serious the people will be likely to visit the doctor, on the contrary, if the colds are just minor things, people will not go to see the doctors. Therefor, we know that wether it is the eat of fish leads to the less incidences of colds is still open to doubt, then any conclusion made by it will definitely unconvincing.

In the second place, even I am concede that there is a causal relationship between fish eating and the less incidents of colds, it does not follow that this method can be used to reduce to absences in school and work. Fisrt, though many people ask for leaves by saying that they have caught the colds, but it is likely just to be an excuses for other purposes. The students may not want to go to school because it is too tired and the weather is too cold; those workers may plan to watch an impotant football match or just want to have a day off. Then, to eat the medicine or not has nothing to do with the absences. Second, admitted the absences are due to the colds the arguer fails to inform us the effets of the medicine. Since we only be aware that the fish eating can help prevent colds but do not know wether the Ichthaid can prevent the colds or not. What's more, the arguer does not tell us the side effect of the Ichthaid, if the medicine have side effects we should be cautious. In those cases, the arguer does not convince us we should use the Ichthaid or not.

In sum the arguer's statement relies on some doubtful facts and ill-logical reasoning that render it unconvincing as it stands. To better bolster the statement, the arguer should provide more evidence to make us sure the absences in school and work are  due to the colds and the Ichthaid are really effective to prevent  it. Only in this way can we reliably use the medicine in our school and work.
