Given the situation that criticism tends to be unfair and captious nowadays, there stems a claim that artist instead of critic creates lasting value. This argument appears to be debasing and neglecting criticism. However, it also appears to need deeper inquisition. The value of criticism is not so simply effaceable and the relationship it associates with art is not so recklessly negligible.

The first step to better understand criticism is to realize that it introduces art to people, who otherwise cannot well understand the ideas artistic works convey. Not is everybody born for art. Sometimes the conception that the artists want to show is abstruse and deeply hidden. The mass need instruction to enjoy the delight artists try to portray. Therein lies the importance of criticism. By analyzing and interpreting the thoughts of artists, the critics generally contribute to the popularization of arts. How can we imagine the feelings of Leonardo DaVinci fulfilled into Monna Lisa without the various explanations of critics since the day it was produced? Maybe just wondering of its artistic techniques. And the understanding of people can largely intrigue artists’ inspiration and therefore stimulate the growing and flourishing of art. Without criticism the expressions of art may be not so easy.
  
Also, the critics can imbue their own ideas and conceptions and feelings into their work. We can always notice that a critic is also an artist himself. This overlap of role can greatly benefit the improvement and adjustment of art. When different artists with different opinions criticize each other, they can be both inspired by the collision of their minds. It has been inferred, for example, that Marcel Proust gained his minds of writing the book Remembrance of Things Past, when trying to answer the critique given to him by Saint-Beuve. Also artists with similar opinions can discuss their pursuit together and make amendments and give advices to each other. It is in this cycle of producing and feedback that our art step forward. This phenomenon reveals the important role of criticism in encouraging and supervising art.

Further more, the claim of the independence of art and criticism in society may be irresponsible. As discussed above, the relationship of art and criticism is always delicate. Good art and correct critique can provide the society more than pleasure. When enjoying a piece of art work we communicate with the artist. If complemented by a proper critique, we feel that we can decide whether to be for or against the view of the artist and hence we are absorbing the real spirit of art in every pore. The purpose of art and criticism in society get fulfilled. However, vulgar art and fastidious criticism are more likely to not only irritate us but also undermine each other and hence cause harm to society. Then the value of both artists and critics get damaged.

In sum, both artists and critics contribute to our society at different extent. Without critics, the art goes aimless. And without artists, the criticism goes meaningless. Therefore, little good can be expected for our society if either one is neglected.
