In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

In recent decades, when people come across such question that whether the faculty of college should spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach to improve the quality of instruction, people are easily misled to a dilemma. Some protesters would like to say that instructors at the college should focus on their own studying field. As far as i am concerned, for the sake of improving the quality of educating, instructors working at the college and university should more or less spend time working outside their academic world. Here are some reasons for my standpoint.

In the first place, nowadays, cross-subject is so popular in our culture world that nobody can finish his a professional problem with the knowledge only in one field. This world is such a subtle world that every thing has more or less relationship with others, including
science. Mathematics is the case in point. As we all know, Mathematics stems from economy. In history, people found that it was difficult for them to solve economical problems precisely, as a result, they turned to mathematics which is so helpful for people to finish their tasks. Even now, there is a subject about mathematics specially applied in economy. Consider, an instructor who teaches economy, if he knows nothing about Mathematics, how could he find the best way to get the most profits with the least cost, which can be easily figure out with a math formula. Thus, people need knowledge in other academic world to be a assistant in dealing with problems in their focus field.

In the second place, studying some knowledge from other fields can offer people new perspective and insight ideas in our own field studying. When we look back in history, we can find a lot of examples to prove that. Vinci, one of the most prominent artists, is not only a famous painter, but also a fabulous physicist. It is said that one of his famous masterpieces, The Smile of Mona Lisa, was created with some physical knowledge applied to paint the background of that noticeable picture. In this respect, instructors at the college or university, whose obligation is to provide the society with best students full of creativity, should more or less spend time to learn something in other relevant fields and encourage their students to learn something relevant at the same time. This will do great good to the whole society.

Admittedly, studying in the relevant fields may distract us and make us lose our focus. But, if we always ask ourselves from time to time such questions that what we need, what we want to solve, what is my point, it is hard for us to lose our focus, meanwhile it will lead us to learn what the relevant knowledge that is useful in our pursuit of our own focus knowledge.

In sum, for the sake of improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level as the author presents, instructors should spend time in studying the outside academic knowledge, should maintain a delicate balance between the focusing on their own field and studying relevant knowledge. We believe that it not only does good to students, but also offers this society a promising future.
