Title:
In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For enhancing the quality of instruction at the college and university, should all faculty be asked to spend their time working outside their academic field in professions relevant to the course they teach? I do not think so. Admittedly, I concede some teachers, who teach the courses required working experience, should accept the suggestion of the speaker. In my view, however, it sounds crazy and not feasible for all teachers in the college and university to follow the suggestion.
It is true that there are some job-oriented courses emerged in today's college and university. And they are very close to the practical world and designed to cultivate students the ability to work in the real world after graduation. Therefore, to teach these courses require the teachers have not only abundant liberate knowledge acquired from books, but also more practical experiences get from jobs. Without working experiences, the teacher can not catch the main feature of these courses. That is to say, the teachers can not teach the courses at the good quality level if they do not spend their time working in professions relevant to these courses they teach. So, the suggestion of the speaker fit these teachers very well.
According the discussion above, is the suggestion suit for any teacher? Definitely no. As we all know that the colleges and universities are not the worker training centers which aims at training worker. The main purpose of the high education is to cultivate student the ability to study themselves and to think themselves. And there are much more courses to serve this purpose, such as the courses of mathematics, physics, arts, etc. The teachers who have no working experiences and just have broad literate knowledge about the course are able to teach these courses. And through any other methods, such as discussion, education in the humor ways and forth, these teachers can enhance their quality of teaching. Furthermore, there are several courses that outside its academic world no relevant working jobs exists, such as maths, physics, etc. The teachers, teaching these courses, can improve their quality of teaching by doing their academic jobs like research. And as we know there are many other skills for instructors to enhance their quality of instruction, consequently, it make nonsense for all instructors to follow the suggestion of the speaker.
To sum up, there are many methods that instructor can use to improve their quality of instruction. And it is one of these methods to spend their time doing jobs relevant to the course they teach. Moreover, the method is not suit for every teachers and for every course. In a conclusion, the methods the instructor should use to improve their quality of instruction depends the course they teach.
