Only through mistakes can there be discovery or progress.

"never give up, as one can succeed only after failure." My farther’s words sounded in my ears every time I suffered depression since my childhood. It is really where my confidence and courage come from, while as I grew up gradually, a puzzle ,whether people can make progress or discovery only through mistakes, arose more than once .Certainly quite a few great arrive at accomplishment after ceaseless mistakes, but it is not to say that undertaking mistake is indispensable to success.

To start with, people who advocate the argument above commit a fallacy in excluding the possibility that one can achieve his or her aim at the first try. Since both success and failure are the results of one's attempt ,there is no reason to argue that every time one , at the beginning ,will end up with failure. It is not strange at all for a kid to give the result 2 to the question how much 1 plus 1 is, which is quite a progress to him, and also a country is not inevitable to suffer great mistakes first which shock most her citizens before realizing property. Especially to the person who face a new task, is it destined to failure? If it is the truth, how to explain that my nephew as well as many other children like him in the world ,received the highest score in his class in the first test. After all in so large a world and facing so complicated problem, arbitrary is to claim mistakes the determined effect of discovery or progress.

Moreover, this argument emphasize too much on the effect of mistakes, which in fact, are not the prerequisite to the break through in inquiry and could be avoided sometimes . It must be admitted that mistakes can provide people a great deal of information and a large number of experiences, and those are deadly needed to each researchers, most of which ,however, we can learn from our ancestors without the practice of ourselves, even the effect being better. As professor Zhang ,the head of  civil engineering of my university said(and I paraphrased ),"Nowadays, the times carrying on  all trials ourselves has gone, and we step in a epoch in which people can make new discoveries whereas make rather less or even no mistakes meanwhile by inheriting the results attained by people before us. "This appropriately demonstrates that with more information and technology becoming available in our society, the role of mistakes as a empirical tool seems diminishing little by little.

In addition,  the saying that failure are the fundamental element of success in any condition, another version of above argument, is much a adage to encourage people in adversity rather than telling a truth. As in many cases, mistakes are unavoidable in the process of discoveries or progress, and thus people usually confront great depression. The appearance of this saying give a hope for them to persist on, with the faith that success will finally come if only overcome difficulties in front. Though encouraging, it could be partial and misleading. Under an implication that progress would be surely made only if undergoing sufficient mistakes, is the focus removed, from exploring solutions to experiencing mistakes, which is not only unhelpful but also even dangerous, for making people farther and farther from the initial aim.

In sum, according to what has been stated above, we can draw the conclusion that although the traditional opinion that any discovery and progress can be simply achieved through mistakes extremely encourage people, the argument itself does not state a fact, for mistakes are not the premise. And we should keep alert to an dangerous inclination placing too much emphasize on the effect of mistakes which leads people in a wrong direction, thereby making us neglect something more significant, such as the contribution of technology and the role of humanbeings’ intellect.
