218"In order for any work of art—whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people."

The speaker asserts that any work of art---whether film, literature, sculpture or a song--must be understandable to most people in order to have merit. I concede that being understandable to the majority help work of art accomplish its goals, however, it is not the prerequisite for artistic work to have merit.

The first object of arts lies in presenting artists' distinct perspectives toward the world, which is not related to understanding of the majority. Universally acknowledged that artists commonly have perspectives beyond ordinary people, much valuable work of art may not be understandable and accepted by the society. For example, Impressionists---such as Monet, Magnet, and Von Gogh, concentrated on the play of light over objects and stressed vivid contrasts between colors in the sunlight and shade. Their achievements presents artists' unique angle of inspecting natural world, which does not be understandable to their peers. Similarly, German composer Beethoven completed Ninth Symphony, a work which summarizes much of his achievements and influence, even after losing hearing. The vision of struggle and triumph manifested in the work comes from Beethoven’s confidence encountering paramount difficulties. This new style of music does not accord with established music rules, thus was not understandable to other people in some period and even dismissed by esteemed critics of his time. In brief, much work of art possesses eternal value, even though not being understandable to most people.

When it is comes to another objects of arts, which lies in enhancing human's spirits, work of art does not require most people to understand the meaning of arts. Work of art usually present subjective feelings of artists, common people without profound comprehension of lives cannot completely understand its meanings. For example, Da Vinci's " Mona Lisa"  and " the last supper",  cited as some of best examples of "true art" in the world, bring the enjoyment of beauty to people. Similarly, Michelangelo's sculpture of “David” and his incredible paintings on the ceiling of Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, which are revered as some of the pinnacles of artistic achievement, bring about enhancing religious spirits for people. One real merit of artistic work involves inspiring the imagination and lifting the spirits of people. Even though people cannot completely understand the meanings of arts, the work of art accomplish its goal of lifting people's spirits.

Aside from foregoing objects of artistic work, some work of art also aims at entertaining people. With the development of mass media and tele-communication tools, especially the Internet, work of art has been much closer to people's daily life. Some people may assert that the criterion of modern artistic work lies in whether it can be understandable to the majority or not. However, people should not overlook this assertion confuse the "true merit" of artistic work with its economic value. Being understandable to most people is the criterion of popular arts, but not one of really valuable arts. Work of art having merits may bring about entertainment to certain people, but not necessarily the majority. Moreover, merely focusing on catering to the mass appetite may result in the losing the fundamental goals of arts.

In sum, being understandable to most people is not the prerequisite to work of art to have merit, because the ultimate goal of art lies in presenting artists' distinct perspectives toward the world, lifting people's minds and entertaining people, which is unrelated with the understanding of people.

The speaker asserts that any work of art---whether film, literature, sculpture or a song--must be understandable to most people in order to have merit. 前面这句对原文的重复最好可以改改,你说呢?I concede that being understandable to the majority help work of art accomplish its goals, however, it is not the prerequisite for artistic work to have merit.

The first object of arts lies in presenting artists' distinct perspectives toward the world, which is not related to understanding of the majority加个maybe吧,否则太绝对了. Universally acknowledged that artists commonly have perspectives beyond ordinary people, much valuable work of art may not be understandable and accepted by the society. This new style of music does not accord with established music rules, 到是这个地方改多些笔墨了thus was not understandable to other people in some period and even dismissed by esteemed critics of his time. In brief, much work可数的 of art possesses eternal value, even though not being understandable to most people.

When it is comes to another objects of arts, which lies in enhancing human's spirits, 不知道enhance people’s spirits的表达是否确切?看的不是很明白,感觉最好能说的具体点work of art does not require most people to understand the meaning of arts.
