List of scandals with "-gate" suffix

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

The English suffix -gate derives from the Watergate scandal of the United States in the early 1970s, which resulted in the resignation of U.S. President Richard Nixon. The word "Watergate" comes from the the fact that the place where the scandal started was the Watergate Complex.

On June 17, 1972 agents of the Nixon White House and the Nixon reelection campaign were arrested while breaking into the office of the Democratic National Committee, which at the time was located in the Watergate Complex (a combination of residences and offices located near the Potomac River) in Washington D.C. Over the course of the next two years the scandal grew from what initially appeared to be a relatively small and inconsequential event to become one of the biggest political controversies in U.S. history.

Given the widespread reporting of the Watergate scandal, people worldwide could easily understand that new words with the suffix -gate implied some kind of wrongdoing and it has since been used to name various other scandals, many of which were distinctly minor affairs, by comparison, as the following list demonstrates. The reader may judge whether the cumulative effect has been to trivialize the issues of Watergate.

GLORIAGATE UPDATE
By Michelle Malkin   ·   June 13, 2005 06:59 AM
The U.S. MSM aren't paying much attention, but Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, president of the Philippines, is in deep trouble over vote-rigging allegations. John Marzan has posted a round up at his blog, Philippine Politics 04.

Tapes of the alleged conversations between Arroyo and an election official are available here. The U.S. has offered to look into the authenticity of the tapes, but according to the Philippines Daily Inquirer, the U.S. Charge d'Affaires says "the Philippine government has yet to make any request for U.S. assistance on the matter."

The Inquirer also reports that Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez "has been threatening to slap charges on media organizations found to have caused the spread, the playing and the printing of the contents" of the tapes. Shades of Adscam.

Elsewhere, William Pesek Jr. of Bloomberg News writes that "investors have reason to worry anew about the outlook for the Philippines."

另:阿罗约在沉默三周后,于27日在电视讲话中承认去年选举期间曾致电选举委员会官员,并为这一"判断错误"向国民真诚道歉,希望以次关闭用来比喻这一丑闻的"格洛丽亚门"
