Imagine that one day you will be able to travel to the Moon, and how excited you will be. At the same time imagine that one day you will meet many copies of yourself, and how surprised you will be. As the results of progress in science research, probably in the foreseeable future these oracles will come true. Therefore as to the title statement, I cannot agree with it wholeheartedly. In my opinion, money spent on research does not automatically become a good investment.
First, scientific achievements as a result of research have made great contributions to the well-being of human being. By plane we can fly over a long distance in several hours that once took man months or even a year to go. With medicine professors in universities and doctors in hospitals, we are living a much longer life than our ancestors. With the help of ever-running machines in the streamlines in factories, we no long need work hard physically and can have more leisure time to enjoy life.
Second, however, there are also cases of research that threaten the interest of people. For example, although atomic bombs have made great contributions to ending the World War II, now the development of nuclear weapons has been a serious concern all over the world due to its potential to cause disastrous damage to all the mankind. As a result, Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons has been signed by many countries. Breakthroughs in the field of medicine are also not always good. The sex ratio in China has become serious due to the widespread use of B Super. In some provinces the ratio of men to women is 130: 100. Although B Super is strictly forbidden to be used to judge the sex of a fetus, in fact the policy has not been enforced successfully.
Third, we should strike a balance in how we allocate the resources including money among competing societal objectives, including research and solution to problems which do not need research. In an sense, research is the exploration of the unknown for true answers to our questions, which makes it inevitable that researches always carry significant opportunity costs. Therefore we have to be cautious in determining the use of money available.
finally, even the results of some researches are controversial, it is human rather than researches should be responsible for the disadvantages. The purpose of research and its results should be carefully and responsibly guided. Actually, when applying funds for a certain research, researchers are usually required to submit a report stating its potential advantages, as well as the potential negative effect. The authorities will also carefully examine the feasibility of the research before funds are allocated. And during the process of research and after the results are put to practice, both researchers and relevant authorities are also responsible for scrutiny and guidance.
