香港之大学申请蠡测

书到用时方恨少，事非经过不知难，吾曾奔波疲命，甚感无绪之艰，此家园虽好，略显零乱碎杂，乏缺列系，故常存规划一统，总结归纳之念，以慰长想。然一人之力嬴弱，泰山不让土壤以成其大；河海不择细流而就其深。拙文略述于闲暇，书不尽言，言不尽意！仅以引玉抛砖，以求贤达补善，泽被后贤。

大凡世事，千里行之，始于足下。欲以请申，先必博观约取，薄发厚积；亦需知彼知己，一战方成。知彼之渠有三：他人荐之；章文知之，校网捕之。

师若母父益友，选适我良师，需慧眼独具，大凡颇具名望，岁已高者，实不能亲执牛耳。从之，只能习其毛皮，不得精髓。如尔羽翼未丰，易手低眼高，如老虎食天，无处口之；颇带基础，独立寒秋者，在其宏观之帷幄中或有作为！选师，岁在40春秋，有一定根基并具发展潜力者为宜，在其具体导引下，由浅入深、循序进渐之。

学士之位，选校为先，位重高者，择师为优，强师胜名校也。其理如司马昭之心，弗费墨笔。

香江之校，可数屈指，虽千秋各异，然实力以港大、中文、科大为马首，理工、城大随之。此共睹与目，无需赘言。君子择之，需狡兔三窟，并进多路，薄收广种，勿栖守一树，拘泥一沤。先通信与师，如空位以待，则据己所爱，善而择之，逆则改道依次，至有师许允，方进而行之。未有师选，先投于校，犹如自寻无路，幻果空花；所谓皮之不存，毛何附焉，不足取也。

港大、中文、科大之师有生杀之权，定死活之路，其许之，若无殊情，则功成过半，高枕无忧矣。理工、城大师之力瘦弱，允诺欣然，方是登堂，并未入室，待综析优选方定。君子明察之。

老聃有云：知人者智，自知者明。请申之际，先自量力重几何，凡仕出学士，求谋博士之位难行，硕学行列犹可。身起名门之后，成绩可观者，其志为喜；非发萌班科，略备成效者从之。怀章文于异域，则倍增价身，霸业可成。目注港大者，以拥寄托者为佳，余校挟六级或亦夺定乾坤。然世局若棋，时有阳错阴差，变外生变，故前述不可为定论。

谚曰：虽有慧智，不如乘势；虽有鎡錤，不若待时。港校一岁二耕，四七月收之，故君子当乘势应时，大计早定，未雨绸缪。则可运筹帷幄于前，决胜千里之外。

书曰：兵马未动，粮草先行。兹拣述备材之要纲，以飨诸贤。

盖历履之写撰，应持以学术为主，余他辅之，格风当明简扼要，以不失才略姿风为机先，兼展堪造化之底功。

夫对PR之目题，由港师亲定为宜，其文可重可轻。若有力未充者，以此为机，备带三分入木之解见，标新立异之力骨，或可路转回峰，击水三千，扶摇万里。

凡信函之法章，无有定规，堪繁堪简，因人而异。唯患无有实证，而谈兵泛泛，则如春蚕作茧囚缠，似秋蛾赴灯焚毁。世事之为向上一语，唯平实耳，是以水唯能下方成海，山不矜高自及天。君子不可不明也。

兹附几范文于后，一孔之见，惟供酌参。白石老人云：逆我者昌，顺我者亡。君子当以小见大，一叶知秋，推陈出新，不可为典要，束拘系缚。

请申之途，冗事杂繁，故君子事来而心始现，事去而心随空。若风来疏竹，风过而竹不留声；雁渡寒潭，雁去而潭不留影，方显从容。

兹以世界上最伟大的推销员一书数语为尾，愿心安平。

没有一件值得一做的事，可在您一生中完成；因此您需要希望；

附：申请所需资料

To apply for admission to a research degree programme, applicants are required to submit the following to the School of Graduate Studies:

1.  completed application form; and

2. application fee payment; and

3.  two photocopies of the following supporting documents:

a.  a research proposal with clear objectives and proposed methodology.

b.  official certificates and transcripts of academic qualifications. (Certificates and transcripts that are not in English should be accompanied by a formal certified translation in English.) [Applicants who obtained degrees from institutions that gave degree classification and/or grade point average but are not shown in the certificate or transcript are required to also send copies of any other official documents that indicated their formal degree classification or grade point average.]

c.  certificates of professional qualifications, if applicable. (Certificates that are not in English should be accompanied by a formal certified translation in English.)

d.  (in support of the applicant's publication record, if applicable) the front page of the papers (for papers that have been published) or the letter of acceptance (for papers that have been accepted for publication). [Applicants to the School of Law must also submit a self-assessment (of not more than 400 words) of their publications together with full copies of their best three publications. Where any publication so submitted is in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by an abstract in English.]

e.  international English language test results, if applicable. [For TOEFL results, applicants may send in a copy of their score record or arrange with the TOEFL service centre to send the record directly to the University (Institution Code: 3401).]

Applicants are also required to nominate two academic referees who can comment on their academic performances (proposed supervisor and persons from non-academic circles are normally not acceptable as academic referees). Please send the Referee's Report Form to the referees and invite them to complete the form and return it directly to the School of Graduate Studies under confidential cover.

This is ×××, I am working in Professor ××× group, State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. Prof.××× recommended me to your group for PhD programme, I visited your website and was very interested in ××× in your group.

I was graduated from the ××× University in 2000, then I was recommended to ××× University for master degree. From 2001 to 2003, I was admitted to research work in Professor Can Li group as a joint-educated student, and later I worked there still now. My research work focus on the synthesis and characterization of polyoxometalates (POMs) and their application in selective oxidation of organic molecules. I found a recoverable amphiphilic catalyst assembled in the interface of the emulsion droplets, showing high selectivity and activity in the oxidation of alcohols, sulfides and olefins. The reaction systems provide a high interfacial surface area per unit volume, and the limitations due to interphase mass transport are greatly reduced. This result was published in J. Mol. Catal. A: Chem, J. Catal.，Topics in Catalysis and applied for one Chinese patent. In addition, I cooperated with other researchers in ultra-deep desulfurization of diesel by oxidation-extraction approach, This is a very interesting but very challenging subject. I found the catalytic oxidative catalysts, which can oxidize the dibenzothiophene-like compounds present in diesel fuels into sulfones under mild reaction conditions. This result was published in A European Journal-Chemistry and applied for one Chinese patent. The work was also highlighted by Green Chemistry (2004, 6, G63).

I took charge of one research projects sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation, and led two projects sponsored by China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation. With my hardworking and continuous learning, I have gained many practical experiences and knowledge.

The ultra-low sulfur (less than 10 ppm) diesel fuels can be obtained via a combination process of selective catalytic oxidation and adsorption (or extraction). The combination process for the production of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuels was also applied for one Chinese patent.

As the supervisor of ×××, I think he is one of the best students in my group. He is very active and productive, and works very hard. He has solid background of chemistry and catalysis, especially catalysis in petroleum and petrochemicals. He has the experiences in using various techniques in chemistry and catalysis, such as catalyst preparation, catalytic reactions using microreactor, GC-AED, TPR, TPD, FT-IR, NMR, and Mass Spectroscopy. Moreover, the catalysts can be separated and recycled. This result was published in J. Mol. Catal. A: Chem, J. Catal., Topics in Catalysis and applied for one Chinese patent. In addition, He cooperated with other researchers in ultra-deep desulfurization of diesel by oxidation method, He invented the catalytic oxidative catalysts, which can oxidize sulfur-containing molecules to sulfones in diesel. The sulfur content of diesel is reduced from the several hundred-ppm range down to only a few ppm that meets the stringent environmental regulations. This result was published in A European Journal-Chemistry and applied for one Chinese patent. The work was also highlighted by Green Chemistry (2004, 6, G63).

He is good at the design, preparation, and characterization of catalysts in selective oxidation. He is one of the best students in our group. He has a lot of experiences in using various techniques in chemistry and catalysis, such as catalyst evaluation by using microreactors, catalyst characterization by using GC-FPD, HPLC, XRD, FT-IR, NMR, and Raman Spectroscopy and so on.
