What is the position of the nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal persuits? The speaker says it is an important supplement of mainstream science to meet human needs. In my view, in some areas  and eras it plays a vital role, but not all the areas.

Admittedly, in old times, when science and technology was not developing so fast, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry helped people explain what the so-called mainstream science can not explain. When something strange happened mostly natural phenomenons such as flash and thunder or the falling stars, people would get afraid of them because they didnot know why they happened. They may thought something bad would happen, and get feared of it. If more and more people thought like this, there would be a disaster. Thanks to the inquiry as astrology and fortune-telling, people were given some information, maybe right maybe wrong, that helped them get rid of the trepidation. There are so many examples in the history. As in ancient China when lunar eclipse appeared during the night, people thought the moon was eaten by a dog in the sky. Then they would make big noises to frighten it. When the moon came out at last, they thought they succeeded. So when there is some area the mainstream science cannot reach, nonmainstream is a good substitute to it.

In modern times, nonmainstream areas of inquiry still have its place in our daily life. Though in many case we have not to use it to explain the natural phenomenons, we still need it when sometimes we cannot make decisions. We may meet the situation that we are in a quandary, and then we will give it to the destiny. What's more, when we feel there is no way ahead, we may need the fortune-tellers to give us hope. When the fortune-tellers set a goal for us, we will believe in it absolutely, thus make great effort to obtain it. So the the nonmainstream areas of inquiry today is still useful for people.

By contrast, if we all believe in the nonmainstream areas of inquiry, we will be misleading by them. For example, when the astrology shows us a bad omen, we will be too scared to do anything else.

In sum, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a less important role in modern times, but they still have their position. We should know how to make use of it. And if we use it well, they may show us benefits, or they may even kill us.
