Should we take a pragmatic way to ensure survival, or should we adopt a idealistic views to set a ultimate goal? People, including the author, assume that the pragmatic should be attached more importance to, claiming the idealistic way cannot solve the immediate questions. As for me, while I concede that in this era advocating utilitarianism pragmatic seems to be more important, I deem that both pragmatic behavior and idealistic view deserve equal importance for the sake of sustainable development not simply at the present but in the future as well.

Truly, pragmatic behavior paves the way to ultimate success, without which everything is a air castle, let alone our basic survival. In any realm of life, varying from academic to social, from business to politics, we human-beings keep being plagued by a host of immediate problems that calls for timely attention that is the pragmatic behavior. For supporting instances, one need go no further than our daily life. The companies' first priority is to make profit for employees and employers; a nation' first concern is to integrity of the nation and the stability of the society; and the scholar’s basic demand is to summon up enough fund to support their possibly detached experiments. All of these behaviors can be exactly defined as pragmatic behaviors. To be sure, by doing so, can we guarantee we will not fail on the half way. This can be best illustrated by comparing a pragmatic action to a brick. Without one brick after another piled on the foundation, hardly could we eventually build a magnificent skyscraper. Hence, taking a pragmatic attitude towards our development is a solid insurance to the smooth advancing forward.

Yet, by saying the pragmatic view is insurance, it does not mean the idealistic attitude is nothing; rather, in order to better build our skyscraper, the idealistic view is an indispensable part for the final achievement. Similarly, comparing idealistic point of view to a blueprint of the skyscraper can be easier to understand the pivotal role it plays in our life. Obviously, although people have already attainted a pile of blocks, and they start to build the gorgeous architecture, if there is no proper, correct, detailed goal, by which I mean the blueprint instructing people what the building will be after finishing, it is quite impossible for people to finish the project. Furthermore, the building is very likely to deviate from the supposed shape or even collapse into dusts due to the lack of cautious design. So it is with the idealistic view. We use idealistic view to set an ultimate goal for our endeavor, so that we will not be averted by other negative or breaking up factors, whereas the pragmatic action paves the way to the goal.  So crucial the final goals is, it adds the meaning into our endless striving, illuminates the way we are walking, and what is more important, grants our confidence on the bright future. Indeed, throughout the recorded history, a host of celebrities could serve to prove this point. Were George Washington and Gandhi set a vision to win the independence from the Britain, till today American and India would still be the colonies of Britain. Expanding to vaster theme, in business, companies always have their diverse vision and mission; in academic, scholars also set their goal to prosper the society. Both of them indeed are representatives of idealistic view. In short, idealistic views help make clear a destination we can strive for that is quite paramount for the continuous development.

Therefore, for the reason that to build a skyscraper, not only the bricks but also the blueprint is required and indispensable, we should take both of pragmatic behavior and idealistic view to ensure the success, no matter the immediate or the further. Hence, in this sense, a coordinate marriage of pragmatic behavior and idealistic views seems favorable to people and appropriate for the reality. Needless to say, the immediate survival could be achieved by the former, while the further development could be guided by the latter. The former cannot substitute the latter, whereas the latter is a supplement to the former. All in all, we should bear in mind that completely relying on any of them, cannot help us to develop; instead, we are possibly be inhibited by the imbalance of them two.

In sum, notwithstanding the importance of pragmatic view towards immediate options, the idealistic view cannot be neglected with an ease. For the ultimate success, we human-beings should take both pragmatic behavior and idealistic view towards our present and our future. If so, we can have a bright future far more than mere survival.
