Your score of TOEFL is enough for your application. And if you want to study for PH.D in one of top100 universities, you have to take part in GRE.

First, forget your grades, however good or bad they are. Forget your letters of recommendation, however enthusiastic or halfhearted they are. Forget your standardized test scores, however high or low they are. Finally, forget your extracurriculars, however diverse or nonexistent they are.

Now, try to imagine what the admissions committee members are wondering as they read your essay. It might look something like this:

What sets this applicant apart from the hundreds or thousands of other applicants who have the same grades, the same letters of recommendation, the same standardized test scores, and the same number of extracurriculars?

The personal statement is where you answer that question. Remember that admissions committees wouldn't even be looking at your application if you failed to meet their standards. Your grades and standardized test scores only tell admissions committees that you have the potential to do great work. Through the personal statement, you tell them that you have the passion, dedication, knowledge, and vision to do great work. The personal statement is where you emerge from the letters and numbers of your transcript and test score reports.

How you emerge can be tricky. You must be confident without seeming arrogant, factual without seeming boring, unique without seeming weird. You must show how you turned your weaknesses into strengths. And you must show how what you have done in your personal and academic past will translate into success in your academic and professional future.

GraduEdit's editors have scoured thousands of personal statements and have compiled the following list of seven characteristics shared by virtually all successful personal statements, regardless of level (college or grad school), program (sciences or humanities), or discipline (law, medicine, business).

Specific expectations may vary from one college or university to another, but the following characteristics are essential characteristics of all personal statements.

The Seven Characteristics of Highly Effective Personal Statements
1. Narrative
++
The admissions committee members want you to tell them a story. Virtually all successful personal statements are structured around an illustrative anecdote or recollection. Choosing the right one is as important as it is difficult. The key is that you are able to derive a lesson or two from it. Keep it relevant and interesting, and avoid clichés!

2. Individuality

Unique perspectives wanted. Give the admissions committee a "total picture" of yourself. Here's where all those random extracurriculars start to seem surprisingly relevant to your intended course of study. You want the committee to think, "Wow, I guess ultimate frisbee is kind of like computational neurobiology!"

3. The 3 C's: Curiosity, Commitment, Credibility

You must show that your intellectual interests go beyond your field of study -- i.e., that you have general intellectual curiosity. But you must also demonstrate your commitment to a particular professional goal. Finally, you must convince the committee that you have the credibility -- that is, the knowledge and integrity -- to do the kind of work they are expecting you to do.

4. Two more C's: Clarity and Concision

The articulation of your academic and professional goals must be crystal-clear, your diction must be dense but varied, and your verbs must be active. And needless to say, your grammar and spelling must be spotless. No exceptions!

5. Surprise

If your personal statement doesn't raise an eyebrow, chances are it will be dropped onto the "No Admit" pile. Again, bear in mind that the admissions committees will be reading tons of these, so feel free to take a chance (provided, of course, that the chance you're taking makes you seem interesting and unique rather than crazy -- you want to raise that eyebrow in a good way).

6. Awareness of audience

Admissions committees know that you're applying to other universities, but they want to feel special. Mentioning particularly appealing and relevant aspects of that college or university -- resources, faculty members, etc. -- will make it seem that you're interested in that particular university. Don't brownnose -- just show how that college or university is a perfect venue for your academic and professional development.

7. Revisions and Revisitations

The personal statements we examined had obviously been meticulously pruned and perfected over the course of weeks or months. The writers had had friends, teachers, professors, and/or professional editors help them get their essays into proof-perfect form. The key factor, however, was that none of their original zest and distinctiveness had been lost in the revisions. The writers never sacrificed liveliness for comprehensiveness, and neither should you

The Personal Statement vs. the Statement of Purpose
The Personal Statement vs. the Statement of Purpose

So what's the difference between the personal statement and the statement of purpose? Colleges and universities don't seem to distinguish between them -- unless, of course, they're asking you for both.

As always, when in doubt, stick to the basics.

A personal statement (a.k.a. "the personal essay") is a statement about who you are. That is to say, it is a statement about the sum total of your self in all of its dimensions: intellectual, emotional, academic, athletic, etc. It should not resemble a page from your diary, but it should present your qualifications for getting admitted to a particular program from the standpoint of a personal experience or set of experiences.

Admissions committees ask for a personal statement when no extensive academic experience is assumed; it is therefore most often requested by undergraduate admissions committees. Graduate admissions committees occasionally request a personal statement in addition to a statement of purpose.

A statement of purpose is similar to a personal statement in that it is expected to provide admissions committees with a thorough sense of who you are, but it asks for a more direct and detailed proposal of intent. It is research-oriented and more concerned with specific short- and long-term professional goals. It is therefore a more suitable form for graduate school application essays.

To illustrate the difference, here's a personal statement prompt posed by one top American college:

Write an essay which conveys to the reader a sense of who you are. Possible topics may include experiences that have shaped your life, the circumstances of your upbringing, your most significant intellectual achievement, the way you see the world - the people in it, events great and small, everyday life - or any personal theme which appeals to your imagination. Please bear in mind that we're concerned not only with the content of your prose but with your writing style as well.

Notice the language: life, upbringing, events, everyday life, imagination, writing style. Clearly this essay should be up close and personal, and the quality of your writing should be as high as the substance of it is sophisticated. But notice as well that the prompt doesn't ask for any research or professional goals. Needless to say, you should include that kind of information, but it shouldn't be the emphasis of your essay.

Now compare this to a typical statement of purpose prompt from a top graduate school:

Please write a statement of purpose that incorporates the following:

A. Brief intellectual autobiography describing the formation of your academic interests and concerns.

B. The special area of interest or specific problems, theories, movements, periods, etc., upon which your studies would focus.

C. A description of tentative plans for research; either specific problems or general areas in which you plan to work.

As described, only one-third of the statement of purpose should be autobiographical, and even that part should be directly linked to your research interests. Though there are slight variations from one university to another, the statement of purpose as a genre tends to be fact-focused and detail-oriented.

Applications that ask for both a personal statement and a statement of purpose tend to want the personal statement to be more personal and the statement of purpose to be more than usually focused on research. Together, the essays should present a very clear and detailed picture of you as a person and you as an academic.
