TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 469          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-1-29

Will education be truly effective when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student? The speaker claims so, and I concede that this idea has considerable merits from a normative standpoint. However, the speaker tends to extend this broad assertion to embrace an undesirable extreme, while ignoring certain key factors inherent in this complex issue. On balance, as far as I am concerned, this problem should be considered on a case- by- case analysis.
Admittedly, on the one hand, it is tempting to think that the student- oriented education should be more effective and efficient with respect to its illuminatiing impact on learning. The purpose of education is to enlighten, or to prepare all types of students for their citizenship. In the light of this point, the need to fulfill this purpose requires us to take into account all the specific demands of students, and thereby enhancing the general level of education to a greater extent. In developed countries, a multitude of educational resources are put into the inspiration of the learning process, and then maximize the overall level of acadamic performance. Common sense and my own experience tell us that the interest is the best teacher. Accordingly, arousing the interest of students should be given the topmost priority by the education authorities. Once the interest is in charge, the students could greatly improve their learning process by their own effective learning. Due to the deep and comprehensive awareness of themselves, they can be their own teachers, allocating the educational resources in a more efficient and effective way than teachers. In short, it is rather wise to place the initial efforts on the inspiration of interest by catering to the individual needs and interest of each student. In the end, through the way mentioned above, this brand of education would render the inspired interest automatically take effect in the learning process.
On the other hand is my contention against the speaker's assertion on the basis of the shortage of education resources. Query whether this brand of education will be in consistent with the reality of some developing countries, by which I mean the limitations of insuffient resources relative to the insatiable desire for seeking the truth from the unknown world. Consider, the wide rural areas of China, where a myriad of middle schools are in the danger of fewer and fewer students and faculty members, for the lack of financial support to recruit more experienced teachers, to construct more sound classrooms, and to purchase more advanced teaching and learning equipments. Under such circumstances, how could the school administration meets the diverse demands of each student, while the school itself is on the threshold of shutting down? In short, we should take into consideration the reality of schools, which has to do with the appropriate distribution of scarce resouces, just before we make any firm conclusions.
Finally, along with the process of socialization, the societal productivity would be facilitated to such a certain degree that it could ultimately make the education system easy access to abundant resources in a convenient fashion.blablablablah.... Turning back to the developed countries blablabla ...
To sum up, due to the above- mentioned analysis, whether education should satisfy the individual needs and interests of each student depends largely on some circumstances under which the benefits of this course of action eminently outweigh the disadvantages. In the final conclusion, the optimal approach, for me, is a balance one that education will be most effective when it can please most particular groups of students to a greater extent due to the limitations of education resources.

1. the supposed benefits noted above
2. the feasibility of this kind of education
3. the limitations will be finally overcome by socializaition

Will education be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student? The speaker claims so, and I concede that this claim has considerable merits from a normative standpoint. However, the speaker tends to extend this broad assertion to embrace an undesirable extreme, while ignoring certain key factors inherent in this complex issue. On balance, as far as I am concerned, this issue should be concerned on a case- by- case analysis.
Admittedly, on the one hand, it is tempting to think that education will be more effective when it can better serve the different 感觉应该是多样性吧varied needs of students. The purpose of education is to enlighten, or 为什么要用or to prepare all types of students for their citizenship 感觉这个词不太合适. In the light of this point, the need to fulfill this purpose requires us to take into account all the specific demands of students, and thereby enhancing the general level of education to a greater extent In developed countries, a multitude of educational resources are put into the inspiration of the learning process, and then maximize the overall level of learning progress 可以删去这个of learning progress. Common sense and my own experience 提own experience可能不是很Convincing tell us that the interest is the best teacher. Accordingly, to arouse the interest of students should be given the topmost priority by the education authorities . Once the interest is in charge, the students could greatly improve their learning process by their own effective learning. Due to the deep and comprehensive awareness of themselves, they can be their own teachers, allocating the educational resources in a more efficient and effective way than faculties faculty,感觉还是用teachers吧,不仅仅是大学教师. In short, it is rather wise to place the initial efforts on the inspiration of interest by catering to the individual needs and interest of each student. In the end, through the way mentioned above, this brand of education would render the inspired interest automatically take effect in the learning process.
On the other hand is my contention against the speaker's assertion. Query whether this brand of education will be in consistent with the reality of some developing countries, by which I mean the limitations of insuffient insufficient resources relative to the unsatiable 是不是贬义的? desire. Consider , the wide rural areas of China, where a myriad of middle schools are in the danger of fewer and fewer students and faculty members, for the lack of financial support to recruit more skilled teachers experienced teachers, to construct more sound classrooms, and to purchase more advanced teaching and learning equipments. Under such circumstances, how could the school administration meets the individual needs and interests of each student, while the school itself is on the threshold of shutting down? In short, we should take into consideration the reality of schools, which has to do with the appropriate distribution of scarce resources, just before we make any firm conclusions.
To sum up, due to the above-mentioned analysis, whether education should satisfy the individual needs and interests of each student depends largely on some circumstances under which the benefits of this course of action eminently outweigh the disadvantages 念起来很拗口,this course of action?. In the final conclusion, the optimal approach, for me, is a balance one that education will be most effective when it can please most particular groups of students to a greater extent due to the limitations of education resources.

196 "Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life." [05/15; 06/3]

Argument 239

The following appeared as an editorial in the local newspaper of Dalton.

"When the neighboring town of Williamsville adopted a curfew four months ago that made it illegal for persons under the age of 18 to loiter or idle in public places after 10 p.m., youth crime in Williamsville dropped by 27 percent during curfew hours. In Williamsville's town square, the area where its citizens were once most outraged at the high crime rate, not a single crime has been reported since the curfew was introduced. Therefore, to help reduce its own rising crime rate, the town of Dalton should adopt the same kind of curfew. A curfew that keeps young people at home late at night will surely control juvenile delinquency and protect minors from becoming victims of crime."
