Do the nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science? Basically speaking it does useful in some sense. For it have some imsubstitutable functions. But because of its own shortcomings its role is not as vital as many people think.

Nonmainstream areas are useful because it comfort people. Even though the science today is highly developed, there are also many fields that science can not explain. For example, the future maybe most people are interesting in his future. But any strict scientists will it you it is impossible to know. To comfort the spirit most people may have a try of fortune-telling. It will tell you your future in a cabalistic way. In my opinion most people will take it as a relax of the nerves. It is necessary for human beings. For we are always search after the unknown world but the impersonal restrictions will never let us know all. So we need something to comfort us. The nonmainstream areas do.

However, the explanations that the nonmainstream areas give are to satisfy people. Sometimes it is not reasonable or even misleading. So we should tell apart vicious areas from nonmainstream areas. The vicious areas such as heresy play an negative role by misleading people. For one person the heresy will lead him a wrong way. It may make one people harmful for the society through violence, lacking of the ability of work and so on. For the whole society it will influence the security and efficiency.

Moreover, different peoples have different nonmaistream areas which play different roles. Sometimes it is necessary for one nation maybe cut on figure for another. Maybe it is incomprehensible for Americans that most Chinese never go to the church. Religions play an important role in United States. But in China it can be ignored.

Another negative factor of the nonmainstream areas is that it sometimes block people from searching the truth. Most nonmainstreams have no serious fundamentals. The aim of them is also not to search the truth. As people are satisfied by them they will pay no effort to search after. Or even the effort to find the truth is cut by them. In order not to block the search, the nonmainstreams must in a reasonable degree. After all, the science is the leading power and serves us the life today.
