60-Second Science - February 19, 2008

Crichton's Climate Science Fiction

Some strong comments from John Holdren, director of the science, technology and public policy program at Harvard’s JFK School of Government.  Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Holdren was talking about media coverage of climate change science: “You know, Michael Crichton, who has become one of the most prominent skeptics in the country, was brought by Senator Inhofe as his chief science witness at a hearing about climate science.  I mean, this is a lapsed physician turned science fiction writer, who has the colossal arrogance to say under oath in a hearing when asked by Senator Feinstein, ‘Dr. Crichton, do you actually believe that your understanding of this matter is superior to that of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences?’ To which he happily answered yes.  There’s no penalty for that kind of colossal combination of arrogance and ignorance unless you happen to be a scientist.  There is a penalty for that sort of thing if you are a scientist.  And that puts the scientists at a significant disadvantage in this kind of interaction.”

Life is like a 2πr.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

我自己的听写
Some strong comments from John H, director of the science techonology and public policy programm at Harvard's JFK School of Government.
Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the advancement of science, H was talking about immediate coverage of a climate change science.
The macro * has become one of the most prominent * in the country with product by the senator in hobbies of cheap science witness.
At the hearing about climate science, at the minute of the last position turn science fiction writer, who has the colossory arrogence to say under old * hearing when asked by senator F, Doctor C you actually believe that your understanding of this matter.
It's superior of the US national acadamy science * have a * guess.
There is no panalty for that sort of colossal combination of arrogence and ignorance, unless you have to be a sciencist, there is a panalty for that * if you are a sciencists.
And that pushed the sciencists under a significant disadvantage in this kind of *.

Tweezers Made of Light Beams
Using beams of light to hold molecules in place or tug at them, researchers have directly measured the strength of protein chemical bonds and could tease out more cellular secrets. Cynthia Graber reports
[The following is an exact transcript of this podcast.]
Imagine tweezers so fine that you could reach right into a cell and manipulate individual molecules. M.I.T. researchers have created such a tweezer, using beams of light. The tweezer is so precise it’s been used to determine how strong the chemical bonds are between two protein molecules in a cell. The research was published in the June 30th edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It builds on work published last fall, when the same scientists demonstrated that so-called optical tweezers could pick up and move cells on a microchip. Scientists wanted to investigate protein bonds to get a better understanding of the forces that give cells structure and the ability to move around.
They used the light-beam tweezer to pin one type of protein in place. Another beam tugged at a second protein, which eventually broke completely away from the first. By knowing the energy necessary to break the bond, the scientists were in fact measuring the strength of that bond. Researchers say the tweezers can be applied to hundreds of other protein interactions that make up the cell’s architectural skeleton—potentially teasing out secrets of how cells work.
