60-Second Science - December 03, 2007

Even Low Lead Levels Lower IQ

Toy companies and parents reacted quickly this year when some toys made in China were found to contain lead.  Because lead is known to affect kids’ cognitive development.  In 1991, the Centers for Disease Control set a federal standard of 10 micrograms of lead per deciliter of blood.  So the eight percent of US kids five and younger who have lead levels between 5 and 10 micrograms are considered safe.  But recent Cornell University research in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives supports a stricter standard.

The research team had previously followed kids from birth through age five. The current study looked again at the children at age six.  The kids were divided into two groups: one with blood lead levels between 0 and 5, and the other with 5 to 10—again, currently considered okay. Turned out that those in the 5-10 group had IQ scores about five points lower than those with the lowest lead levels.  Scientists say this could affect educational performance later in life.  They recommend reconsidering federal standards for lead in consumer products and reevaluating the acceptable blood lead levels in children.

Life is like a 2πr.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.

60-Second Science - December 04, 2007

Divorce Wrecks Environment Too

We all know divorce can be hard on the kids. But did you ever stop to think about what it’s doing to the environment? Well scientists at Michigan State University have. After crunching the numbers, they’ve found that when couples split, they use more land, more energy, and even more water than before.

Here’s why. After a breakup, the parties move into smaller, individual households, which means more land used, and more resources consumed per person. In 2005, in the US, divorcees occupied 38 million extra rooms, and used about 50% more electricity and water per person than they did while married. These findings appear in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

So how can we keep doomed relationships from taking the environment down with them? The authors note that if all these newly liberated singles remarry, the problem disappears.  Or maybe they could just move in with one another.  Of course, then you have to wonder…[Odd Couple theme song and voice over: Can two divorced men share an apartment without driving each other crazy?]

60-Second Science - December 05, 2007

Gene Helps Turn Carbs Into Fat

It’s no secret that there’s an obesity epidemic going on.  Many researchers blame highly processed carbohydrates, such as high-fructose corn syrup and white flour.  Now scientists at the University of Wisconsin in Madison have started to tease out the role of the liver in converting those calorie-rich foods into fat. The researchers isolated a gene in the liver called SCD-1. The gene codes for an enzyme that synthesizes fatty acids.  Mice with the normal gene were fed a diet high in processed carbs.  The mice converted those carbs into fat and stored that fat in the body.  But mice that lacked that SCD-1 gene just burned all those carb calories.  And stayed skinny.

This finding reveals that the liver determines whether or not eating refined carbohydrates will lead to fat gain.  The researchers say this system is a good example of a direct diet-gene interaction. But they also say that a drug to turn off that fat-making liver gene  wouldn’t be a good idea.  Without that gene, the mice could no longer make glucose. They ended up hypoglycemic—suffering from low blood sugar.  So the solution is, sadly, what you already knew: eat fewer processed carbohydrates.
