Issue 103
TOPIC: "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
The speaker alleges that it is valuable to study history only insofar as it is relevant to our daily lives. I find the speaker underestimates the significance of history too much and failed to realize that history, an accumulated huge reservoir of almost everything, can be instructive in so many other respects beyound daily life.
To begin, as a famous people said “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”, studing history helps comtemporary people avoid to make some similar mistakes as our predecessors did. Actually, reviewing what we’ve done in the past is certainly not a new concept, and such job is done in almost every domain from Political to Medical field. There is the post-mortem in medical field, which aims to find what leads to the ultimate outcome. Although it can not improve our healthy immediately, it will save the patients who will undergo the same experience in the future.
Besides such root cause analysis mentioned above, people, especially scientists, also look at the past for various trend ditecting. As history often covers a long-time span, it is possible to supply people with huge information which is necessary for people to get some true rules according to probability theory. For instance, in climate research, Scientists can only reveal the green-house effection after a few years’s observation. The Global warming will not threaten people’s lives in some low-altitude areas right now or even in a few years, but if human beings keep rising the temperature, it may bring great disasters to our decedents. Also consider some other history of paticular ocupations, such as volcanical activities, by doing research in them, we can save thousands of people lives when the volcano erupts. It has little relationship with our daily life, but I believe such researching is quite valuable.
In addition, studying achievements of great people also inspire. People often get excited when reading some hero stories, no matter about their intellecutal wisdom or strong courage, which can provide motivation when we are in the face of adiversity in our own lives. Such experience seldomly happens in our daily life, because our lives, some dozens of years in some cities, limit our acquaintances, while, history, with its universal resource in thousands of years, can supply some great people who can really arouse our potentials, passions or something else. Such studying will not change our daily lives in the very soon, but its positive effect can profoundly change our way of looking at the world and thus valuable to personal lives.
At last, studying history can broaden people’s knowledge about different countries, religions and nations. If you don’t know some american history, you can not understand the spirit of American constitution well and why freedom is so important to America. If you don’t know some chinese history, you can not understand why chinese government seeks to evaluate its political position in universal affairs so eagerly. If you don’t know some Muslin history, you can not understand why there are so many wars in Middle East. Therefore, such knowledge is quite valuable to the people whoes work is related to these , such as politicians and reporters.
In sum, history itself is composed of numerous facts in various of fields, and whether it is valuable totally depends how people utilize it. And I believe, by studying history, human beings can make some more right decisions and rational choices, which makes a better future for everyone.
