1. Parke, thanks for speaking with Taurus. What is the purpose of your trip to China in September? ' h; D7 i r0 B* t6 m& ^5 F5 d0 o
The University of Virginia is traveling to China in order to speak with students and parents about the incredible number of opportunities that exist for students on our campus and in our community. We hope to be able to share information about the many exceptional academic programs that we offer in a wide variety of fields. We also hope to talk about why studying at a major research university in the U.S will prepare students from China to compete at the highest level in the global marketplace. Finally, we hope to encourage students from China to bring their talents, their culture, and their voice to us so that we might widen our perspective of learning and living.

We want students who are idealistic, hard working, and who like challenges. To put it another way, we want students who want to change the world. We want students who want to become leaders in their fields. We also want students who feel a sense of duty to their country and to the community in which they live. : Q7 c! |! k, T M4 U# _( l

Virtually all of our students have achieved at the highest level academically, but we also want our students to do more than study. We want them to make friends, make connections, and make a difference.

2 Z& f5 N$ n! g( M& h3. What are some typical mistakes Chinese applicants make in their application?
. O7 o/ \3 ^) H8 T2 f! a8 s# F" w+ R7 j- Z. M/ `+ t, s
Too many Chinese students try to make sure we know everything they have been involved with in and outside of the classroom over a period of many years. The feeling seems to be that more is better: more certificates, more photos, more lists of activities. Instead, we focus on what a student has done during the last few years prior to the application process. We do not care about the number of activities or awards or certificates. We care about the quality of commitment a student makes to any given activity. Students should focus on the few passions he or she has in and out of the classroom.

4. Will a Chinese applicant with an overseas background have any advantage over other Chinese applicants?- M% A! J8 j6 P
2 V- C# r* N2 ^1 h* v6 b
We do not give priority admission to a Chinese student who has an overseas background. Some of our very best students from China have never left China until the day they set foot on our campus. Others have lived on almost every continent. It is not how many places a student has been, it is how they have lived and learned wherever they are that matters to us.

' N7 U; u8 [5 M: Y5 L5. Chinese students sometimes lack a clear understanding of which US colleges suit them best. Do you have any advice on how they should go about selecting colleges?8 b$ z2 ~9 `+ ?3 j

Chinese students are among the most sophisticated users of technology anywhere in the world. The students who reach out to Chinese students already in the U.S often get a more personalized view of what a school is like. I do think many Chinese students place too much emphasis on rankings, but that is not unique to China. There are a large number of colleges and universities in the U.S that prepare students well for the future. Looking for a holistic education that a particular school provides as well as the day to day environment in which it takes place is something students should think about more than they have in the past.
