Subject: Which school should I choose for M.A. Journalism?

Hello... I'm drawing a bit of a blank on what school I should attend for my M.
A. Journalism degree.

I've applied to Columbia, NYU, and University of Texas at Austin. I have been
accepted to NYU and UT, but I have not yet heard from Columbia.

If I get into Columbia, I'm probably going to choose Columbia. But that's not
likely to happen (I choked on the entrance exam.)

Does anyone know which one has the better program, and which one will end up b
eing better for a career in magazine journalism?

-- Funksaw.

That doesn't help much... Why do you make those reccomendations? Are you a Jou
rnalism student? And Columbia & NYU are the same amount of money - I'm beginni
ng to think that perhaps Columbia might be worth the money, while NYU wouldn't
.

I am not a J-student no. I know many friends who have applied so similar schoo
ls for J-School and some that have decided against Columbia for the reason tha
t they think the program is over-rated. One of my friends turned down CU's J-S
chool for a full ride at the U of Maryland-CP.

I guess it comes down to what you want.

I only have second hand info, but I hope it helps anyway. I know one person wh
o did the M.A. inJournalism at NYU and she was not very pleased. Said the inst
ructions were u-grad level and the dept. didn't really care about the students
. Of course thats just a sample of one, so if you have student e-mails I sugge
st to write them and ask their opinion. I think I would choose UT over NYU (ch
eaper and probably equal quality, though you have a little bit of reputation l
oss).

I applied to Columbia and Northwestern and am waiting for letters as well... A
nd I think we all choked on that entrance exam, so don't feel too bad.

Columbia is worth the money, I think, relative to NYU and UT. I don't think to
o much of Columbia's curriculum -- and the public "re-tooling" effort by Bolli
nger and the task force makes me question the strength of the current program
-- but, like it or not, Columbia is still Columbia. It might be resting on its
laurels a bit, but it's still got such a great reputation.

NYU, though, also has a good program. If you want to work in NYC or in the Nor
theast and don't get into Columbia, it probably makes sense to go to NYU becau
se of the contacts you can gain. Plus, it doesn't hurt to go to school in the
media capital of the world.

I don't know much about UT's program, but having lived in the Northeast and th
e Midwest I can say that Columbia, Northwestern, Missouri, NYU, and Berkeley h
ave the strongest j-school reps among the people I know.

Hope that helps.

Thank you - man, I feel silly. I didn't recognize nearly half the names (menta
lly flipped a coin and said they were brass at Enron or Worldcom, figuring tha
t since Enron wasn't mentioned anywhere else on the exam, it'd probably be the
re. I missed stuff like Donald Rumsfeld (Called him Chief of Staff instead of
Secretary of Defense - at least I got the branch of gov't right.

I'm REALLY kicking myself over Schroder - I KNEW he was chancellor of Germany,
but crossed that out and wrote Secretary-General of the UN (which I knew was
Kofi Annan) just because I was panicing and didn't seen anyone but Hans Blix a
ssociated with the un.

On the plus side, I got Hugo Chavez 100% right and that's kinda obscure (Head
of State of Venezuela.)

God, I hope I get in now... do you remember when we're supposed to get our acc
eptance/rejection news? And I hope you get in too...

Columbia said they'd sent out notifications by April 1 -- a full month from no
w! Too long to wait, I think. I believe they're the last to notify since they
get so many applicants and also because of that stupid writing test. I re-read
the newspaper story I wrote for the test after I finished -- awful. Mistake-r
iddled and everything. Oh well.

It's amazing, though, that Columbia J-school has this much prestige when so ma
ny aren't bowled over by the actual program. Seems a little silly.

Northwestern is every bit as good as Columbia for journalism -- sort of the wa
y Harvard and Yale compete with one another. Medill has undergone its growing
pains with the establishment of some amazing specializations electives that ta
ke you into a 5th quarter. Columbia will emerge with something similar, it see
ms. They are talking a two-year program, with appropriate financial aid for th
at second year.

I look forward to watching the show.

In the meantime, my toes are crossed this month, since everybody notfies appli
cants between now and April 2.

Columbia's program is indeed antiquated, which is why they're throwing out ide
as for a two-year sequence and some more specialized experiences. I'm surprise
d the current program lasted as long as it did. You're right, it will be inter
esting to see what emerges.

In the meantime, I got into Medill over the weekend and am really excited. The
two best parts of the program -- the quarter in D.C. and the global journalis
m quarter -- aren't even offered by Columbia. I feel a lot better about Medill
because it's not going through internal turmoil like Columbia, and it seems i
ts programs are always adapting.

Here's a link to a Medill FAQ page on the admissions website:

http://www.medill.northwestern.e ... /editorial/faqs.htm

Doesn't list the average GRE score or the number of applicants to the program
(I imagine it's variable, as they have classes start three different times a y
ear), but it does give a couple of breakdowns that might be useful (i.e. male/
female, undergrad major, concentration). When I went to an info. session in Oc
tober I didn't get any concrete numbers either, so I guess they don't give the
m out.

Subject: Medill admissions

The following journalism school insider information was given to me by a relat
ive who is a faculty member at Columbia Journalism.

Medill accepts, on average, 60-70% of their applicants. Thus, getting into a t
op journalism school is nothing like trying to get into top business, law, or
Ph.D. programs.

For example, last year Yale Law took 8.4% of its applicants, while Stanford La
w (ranked 2nd to Yale) had an 11.3% acceptance rate, and Harvard (3rd ranked)
took 16%.

For business schools, last year Stanford accepted 8.3% of its applicants, Whar
ton 14.4%, UChicago 15%.

Medical Schools are even more fierce: (#2) Johns Hopkins took 5% last year, (#
3)Duke 4.5%, and (#6) Columbia 9.8%.

Columbia Journalism's acceptance rate is variable -- running in the range of 1
5-30%, however. Most of the people who decline Medill go to Columbia; that is
basically why Medill accepts such a high percentage of their applicants. That
is also why Medill does not release its admissions statistics, since such numb
ers will give the world the wrong impression, I guess.

As far as GRE scores -- basically they don't care what your quant/analytical s
cores are -- they look at the verbal number, where anything under 600 is virtu
ally automatically rejected.

Thus, Columbia -- the flagship journalism school, has acceptance rates that ca
n run significantly higher than top schools in other fields.

I find it hard to believe that Medill accepts 60-70% if USC accepts about 50%,
as evidenced by the statement below, from their Web site. Medill told me on t
he phone that 25-33% are accepted, depending on the number of applications. Yo
ur 15-30% figure for Columbia does sound accurate, based on what they told me.

This is what USC's Web site says.

How many people apply? Are admitted? Enroll? About 300 applications were recei
ved from those seeking admission to the M.A. in Journalism or M.A. in Strategi
c Public Relations programs for Fall 2002. About 160 of those applicants were
offered admission, and about 70 enrolled.

Whatever,

Numbers don't lie, people do. If you go to the following site:

http://adminplan.crown.northwest ... k/v32/admissv32.htm

you will find the following Medill statistics for the graduate program:

Academic Year

99 98 97 96 95 94 93 92 91 90 89

# of Applicants

524 467 584 560 571 554 539 652 559 579 571

# Accepted

347 288 330 355 334 364 310 374 360 393 376

% Accepted

66 62 57 63 58 66 58 57 64 68 66

# Enrolled

231 197 235 249 243 2 61 270 2 87 290 283 240

so the average rate of accepted applicants over the 11 year period is a whoppi
ng 62%.

Again, my relative tells me that such numbers would not be released in general
because people equate program quality with very low rates of acceptances. Med
ill is a fine journalism school, however. Thus, it is better not to release su
ch numbers.

Sounds to me like you were talking to someone who is seriously deluded or deli
berately misleading you; either way, the action was pure unprofessionalism. Th
is is very disappointing.

I applied to the top 5 graduate journalism programs in the country and have be

Well, some friends of mine thought that I should do graduate studies in philos

Well, now I have a dilemma. Amazingly enough, I actually got in to that philos

I am so stunned I can barely type. I don't know what else to say! or do!!

I've been in a fair-sized newsroom for three years and I'm heading back to sch

ey, NYU, and Medill for graduate journalism school. (Still waiting, like every
one else, on Columbia.) Just wondering if anyone has some input that can give
me some more insight into those schools? I've got visits slated for NYU and Me
dill, but it's pretty unlikely that I'm going to get from Ohio to Berkeley bet
ween now & the decision deadline. My primary interest is environmental reporti
ng, but I also want to learn some basic photography plus more training in busi
ness & legal reporting. I'd be in the Science & Environmental Reporting Progra
m at NYU, and UCB has a concentration in that area as well. Medill & Columbia
don't have those programs ... but they _are_ Medill & Columbia, you know? Thou
ghts, tips, weather forecasts, sports predictions...?

It sounds to me like Berkeley may be a good option for you if you are interest
ed in a lot of different aspects of journalism because it is a two-year progra
m and it has the concentration you are interested in. From what people in the
field have told me, Berkeley is actually as highly regarded as Medill and Colu
mbia, but is a smaller school and, like Columbia, only a graduate program so i
t doesn't get as much attention as the other top schools. Plus, it's tuition,
even out-of-state, is probably cheaper. Where are you interested in working af
ter graduation? In the East, Midwest or West? Maybe that should factor into yo
ur decision as well.

Post-graduation, I've thought more in terms of the size of papers I'd like to
work for, not necessarily a specific location. I'd be happy anywhere except th
e Southwest or most of the Midwest -- which leaves East or West, I guess. So i
t's still a draw! And I think two years at Berkeley, while being cheaper than
one year at Medill, probably will actually be more expensive than the three-qu
arter-and-a-summer program at NYU. Plus, NYU offered me some tuition credit po
ints, so I hope I'll have some flexibility in exploring other classes because
I won't have to scramble quite so much to make sure I get enough credits. Berk
eley appeals to me because the program does seem so flexible -- but NYU's prog
ram has some specific classes that seem tailored to the kind of training I was
looking for. I honestly think my decision is going to come down to those two.
But I'm hesitant to accept a place at Berkeley if I haven't visited the schoo
l to get a sense of the atmosphere.

Hello to everyone who's applying to j-school.

I graduated from Columbia's j-school recently and would be happy to answer any
one's questions about Columbia. (FYI, to those who are waiting, I received my

I could go on and on about my j-school experience, but I will say this (especi

(about two years' worth) before j-school, and I was bored, bored, bored to tea

Basically, I thought j-school was a tremendous waste of time and money. If you
want to go back to school, I would recommend getting a master's in a specific

This is a fascinating post. So you think that my situation (a few posts up) is
really an easy decision to make, then?

Hi "Eugene."

All I can offer is my own experience (obviously), but I think it depends on wh
at you want to do and where you're coming from. Do you know for sure that you
want to be a reporter? Do you have newsroom experience?

The only situation in which I could see j-school making some semblance of sens
e would be if you a) had almost no journalism experience and b)were sure that
you wanted to be a reporter.

Feel free to email me off the board (abby_della@yahoo.com) if you have questio
ns or want to know more about Columbia. Good luck with your decision!

That was generous of you Abby. I, just as Eugene, also await a decision from C
olumbia. I am more interested in comparing it with Medill.

Any comments there?

Hi pug,

I don't know much about Medill. I applied there and got in, but I cancelled my
plans to visit when I found out that I had been admitted to Columbia. I do ha
ve two acquaintances who did the master's program at Medill. They didn't seem
too happy about their experience, but I don't know specifics. Again, I think a
ny j-school experience depends on where you're coming from and where you hope
to be going after the program.

Feel free to email me with questions.

Thank you very much for your discussion. At least someone decided to take it u
p with me.

I am leaning about 80% towards the philosophy Ph..D. at this point. I mean, th
ey gave me money, it is one of the dream departments that people talk about, i
t is absolutely exceptional in my areas of interest, I have friends at the sch
ool already, I have no teaching responsibilities. I just need to get used to t
he fact that I got in. I am so totally stunned. It is almost like winning a ja
ckpot in Las Vegas; you go there with a sum of money that you are prepared to
lose, and out of the clear blue you hit one of the real rich slot machines, at
which point you STOP GAMBLING.

And gambling is what I ought not do. I will visit this dream department for tw
o or three days. And then, just on GP, I will visit Columbia Journalism too (n
o, Columbia is not where the philosophy department that so graciously accepted
me is located).

I guess this is one of those experiences that I dare not share with my philoso
phy colleagues. It just wouldn't enhance my popularity index.

Nope .... but I got into both BU and NYU today. NYU was strange -- I got an e-
mail from a professor saying I was in. Hopefully the Columbia decisions will c
ome down next week!

Congrats on BU and NYU, both good programs. I thought BU's program in D.C. was
pretty cool, and NYU's location is hard to beat.

Like you, I'm still waiting for Columbia to come through... I think it's funny
that we all seem to be waiting for this one school. Best of luck to you, and
keep us posted.

In the meantime, is anyone going to Medill's open house on April 11?

Hi all, Does anyone know how the broadcast journalism program at Syracuse Univ
. ranks in the long list of journalism programs? How about American University
? I'm still waiting to hear from Columbia like everyone else... Thanks for the
help. -Liloulou
