Talk about maternal sacrifice, in the rather freakish twist of nature; baby spiders in some species completely devour their moms. Now researchers have discussed that the practice can get even stranger. Scientist from Israel’s university want to know spider if spider participate in cooperative group mothering, as some mammal and birds do. Investigate of this specie of spider from south Africa known for maternal care and for communal living. The result appeared in the journal behavioral ecology and Sociobiology.

In some experimental nests, the research left groups of female intact, brought or(but) moved excessegg sacks
from all the(but) one of the mother to be. In control groups there is only one female and her eggs. At the end of study, they check on the house (health) of spider babies. In these groups were mutable(mutiple) moms, more egg successfully hatched, and the brood is healthier overall. As for the moms, they were almost all sucked dry, living only in their crispy skeletons(exoskeletons). So now these two to(at least) one species of spiders known to participate in communal mothering. And under the rest (right) circumstances, even the surrogate mums sacrificing everything for its offspring.

If you're not a fan<fond> of cigarettes, you probably hold your breath as you hurry past<when you're passing> the smokers that<and> hang out in front of<from> office buildings, stores and restaurants. Smokers're banished outside because a growing number of cities concerned with the possible health effects of secondhand smoke have baned smoking in eateries, workplaces and
other such establishments.
Turns out holding your breath might not be such a bad idea. Because scientists at the University of Georgia in Athens have found that sidewalk smokers can generate more pollution than passing cars.

Athens, Georgia, is a major college town, and on the weekends, students are packed<will pack> shoulder to<and> shoulder outside bars and restaurants. And since smoking is banned inside<in> such locations, plenty of those kids're puffing up<upon> a storm. That made the Georgia researchers wonder whether outdoor secondhand smoke couldpresent a health hazard of its own. So they measured the carbon monoxide levels outside a handful of bars and restaurants. Because this gas is<those gases were> also found in car exhaust, the researchers counted the number of cars and the number of smokers. And they found that the pollution was coming from the people, not the tailpipes<tirepipes>. So next time you stroll past a bunch of the banished<strong pass punch banish>, take a deep breath and feel free to run.

eatery: n. 食堂,餐馆
sidewalk: n. 人行道
shoulder to shoulder: adv. 肩并肩
puff up a storm: 感觉相当于我们说的吞云吐雾(puff up: 膨胀)
present a health hazard: 表现出健康危害
carbon monoxide: CO
a handful of: 少数的,一把的
tailpipes: 排气管(tail:n. 尾部)
hurry past /stroll paststroll: v. 漫步;past: adv. 经过)

That made the Georgia researchers wonder whether outdoor secondhand smoke could present a healther hazard of its own.
怎么理解of its own 呢?我理解的是前文说了不能在室内吸烟,而研究者就想知道二手烟本身就是有害的,与室内室外无关。

这篇感觉要简单很多啊:D

Evolution continues today and sometimes we can watch it happening. Researchers in November 6th additional(edition of) journal science said they called and act(caught in the act) a population of butterfly in Ecuador, potentially diverging into two distinct species.

Heliconius butterflies spread across the central and South America. What distinguishes differing Heliconius species is colors variation. For instance, in Costa Rica the two most closely related species are white or yellow, which prefer to mate with those of their own color.

In Ecuador, there are also yellow and white Heliconius butterflies live close to one another and mate freely. But that situation might be changing; scientist study butterflies in captivity, the two types differ in just one gene responsible for color, but yellow male prefers yellow female, while white males go for either colors of female.

The difference in mate preference could eventually lead two distinct species as in Costa Rica with yellow and white butterflies that no longer inter reed(breed). The researchers will continue to study the role of genes in both color and mate choice, which quick(could) send the population diverging forever into new species.

Evolution continues today, and sometimes we can watch it happening. Researchers in the November sixth edition of the journal Science say that they caught in the act a population of butterflies in Ecuador(E), potentially diverging into two distinct species.
Heliconius(HC) butterflies spread across Central and south America. What distinguishes differing HC species is color variation. For instance, in Costa Rica(CR), the two most closely related species are white or yellow, which perfer to mate with those of their own color.
In E, there are also white or yellow HC butterflies that live close to one another and have mated freely. But that situation might be changing. Scientists studied the butterflies in captivity. The two types differ in just one gene responsible for color. But yellow males prefer yellow females while white males go for either(other) color female.
The difference in mate preference could eventually lead to two distinct species, as in CR with yellow and white butterflies that no longer interbreed(introbreed). The researchers will continue to study the role of genes in(at) both color and mate choice-which could send the populations diverging forever into new species.

catch in the act xxx: 捕捉到xxx 的一幕
Ecuador: 厄瓜多尔
Costa Rica: 哥斯达黎加
captivity: n. 囚禁,束缚(butterflies in captivity 笼中的蝴蝶)
interbreed: v. 杂交
the role of xxx in xxx
send: v. 促使,促成

又有问题……怎么理解while white males go for either(other) color female中的either呢?两个中的另一个?

Evolution continues today, and sometimes we can watch it happening. Researchers in the November 6th additional(edition of) journal science say that they call(caught) in the act a population of butterfly is ecrodor(Ecuador), potentially diverging into 2 distinct species.

XXX(Heliconius) butterfly XXX(spread) across central (and) South America.(这句那个连音。。。) What distinguish differing XXX species is color vary ission(variation这个词念得真分开) . For instance, in K, tumor(the two most) closely related species are white or yellow, which they may to prefer(prefer to mate with those of) their own color.

In E, there is also white or yellow XXX(Heliconius) butterflies (that live)close to one another and have mated freely. But that situation might be changing. Scientists studied the butterflies in captivity. The 2 types and(differ) just one gene were(删) responsible for color. But yellow males prefer yellow females, while white males go for other(either) color female.

The difference in mate preference could eventually lead to 2 distinct species, as in XXX, with the yellow and white butterflies that no longer which to breed(interbreed v. 使异种交配, 使混种, 使杂种繁殖). The researchers will continue to study the role of gene with(in) both color and main choice, which could spend the populations diverging forever and to(into) new species.
