Issue 161: "In this age of intensive media coverage, it is no longer possible for a society to regard any woman or man as a hero. The reputation of anyone who is subjected to media scrutiny will eventually be diminished."

It is no doubt that all the famous figures such as heroes nowadays are under highlight and be paid more attention to than any time in history. However, it does not mean that their reputation will be ruined by the close scrutiny from society. Ones fame eventualy hinges on characteristics and much more supervision is just some subjective factor which can not determine it.

Actually, the new technology has contributed a lot to the methods of revealing heroes true minds and acts. With the help of mini digital video machines, one may record others action without their permission. Although that kind of action might be illegal for keeping one's privacy, the action was taken towards public figures again and again. Human being has a character called curiosity and that thing might be the resource of peering. In that circumstance, the watcher's main energy will be on some dismerit he find in the figure's small daily life through his perspection. That can be great result of his one day work. However, it does deface some aspects of our heroes. It will be so hard for a public person to keep his fame to some extent.

However, a truly noble person can not be defamed by such mean methods. A truly noble person is someone with high moral standards and so harsh with himself that at no time he will do some mean indeed in daily life which others can take advantage of. Someone may assert that there is no such noble person since we are all ordinary people. We have the idea of selfishness and egoism. However, as heroes with high reputation, they should be with high morality and merits that ordinary person do not have. Otherwise, they are so hypercritical that should not be regarded as heroes. We can take Clinton as an effective example. After his successful dealing with technology foam in stock market in 1990s, he received such a high reputation in United State that some critics take him as the hero of the nation in the new time. But when the Lewinsky issue came up to the public's eyes, he instantly became a controversial person. It is not because we know more about Cliton that he is no more our hero. It is his action which defaced his reputation and pulled him down. Zhou Enlai, the famous leaser of China, was such a noble person that no one in Chinese would give some bad comments on him. He had been the leader of China for decades and no negative report was given.

Additionly, we should not pay too much emphasis on the the anecdotes of heroes which might lead to putting a cart before the horse. Heroes are also ordinary people and they have their own life. They might have some small defects which should not be taken as a vital damage for their reputation. We can take Liu Xiang, the famous short distance hurdle race athelete of China for example. He is famous for creating the records for the yellow in short distance races. But his absence in 2008 Beijing Olympics has caused much dissatisfaction and many suspective opinion have been thrown towards his reputation. However, we could not deny his feat in breaking records for nation and should not his hero status in sports for all the Chinese.

To sum up, we could have our heroes for our time and under the highlight of media scrutiny. If only they deserve our respection in some fields and their main morality is higher than ordinary person, they can still have a high reputation.
