51.The following appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patientsfrom healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now beenproved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The firstgroup of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, adoctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularlythroughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percentquicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all beingtreated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although thepatients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation timewas not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed withmuscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of theirtreatment."

In this passage, the author concluded thatall patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to takeantibiotics as a part of their treatments. In my opinion, the conclusion ispremature without careful studies and analysis of the survey data, and contains severalsignificant logical flaws.

First of all, the authordescribed a study of two groups of patients treated by different physicians andconcluded that the group taking antibiotics will reduce the muscle strainhealing time. Thestudy is lacking of details such as the background, age groups of the patients. Perhaps the group of patients treated by Dr. Newland aregenerally younger or physically stronger than the group of patients studied byDr.
Alton, perhaps Dr. Alton’s patientshave more serious injury than Dr. Newland’s patients, or perhaps none ofthe patients experiencing secondary infections.

Assume the two groups of patients are fromthe same age group, having the same background and degrees of injuries, theauthor unfairly made the conclusion that it was antibioticshelped the muscle healing. The fact of Dr. Newland is aprofessional that specialized in muscle injuries and Dr. Alton is a general physician wasignored by author. As a general physician, Dr. Altonmaybe not has as much as experiences as Dr. Newland in muscle injuries.
Therefore it is highly possible that Dr. Newland’s experiences significantly helped patients instead of the usesof antibiotics. The author failed to provide information on physicians’ level ofexperiences inmuscle injury treatments
in order to make thecomparisons valid in hisclaim.

Furthermore, there is no information provided on the effect of sugar pills and psychological factors on muscleinjury patients.
Although the group ofpatient treated by Dr. Alton did not experience significant reduction inhealing time, perhaps sugar pills have some unknown functions to affect thehealing time. Moreover, since patients are told to be given antibiotics for theirtreatment, the psychological implication may significantly help to heal themuscle injuries aswell. Thus, one cannot draw to a conclusion thatantibiotics are good for all muscle injuries solely based on the studywithout state the possible consequences by above factors.

To sum up, the claim on every patientwith muscle injury should take antibiotics to help cure is inconclusive, and clearly more information need tobe provided to make this piece of argument convincible.
