31. Money spent on research is almost a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial.
I agree with the speaker’s assertion that investment on whatever researches are worthwhile. However, the idea is manifested on an ideal side that could not be proved reasonable. My point of contention with the speaker is that researches are worthwhile to be invested whether their results are controversial or not, but while practice this in a pragmatic world, we should take enough consideration on those controversial ones.
Researches embody advancement, they are the most efficient methods for human to explore the unknown world, and therefore, money spent on researches is well invested. Human satisfy their desire of knowledge which helps them know themselves and the world around through doing researches. We deduce new ideas on the basis of some current principles that have been proved correct many times. So, researches can be defined as the action to validate the reasonable presumption according to the existing theories. Actually, once the research has any little progressive achievement comparing with the records in the history, it is a successful one for it provides valuable things to the descendents. Whether its final result is failed or controversial, we can still get something useful from it. Moreover, as the numerous branches in science are interlinked, a failure in this field does no mean the same in another.
But all the above is an ideal imagination. In pragmatic world, not only bad research results but other social problems challenge the speaker’s assertion. Firstly, since research is deduced step by step, from the known field to the unknown, we could make some logical prediction before its execution. If the stimulant result turns out to be destructive or controversial, then the research may need some further discussion and consideration. Otherwise, we would probably make a too large mistake which can generate calamities that far beyond our capability to deal with. A compelling example is that long after human has discovered the secret of genome; clone is still under strong debate and banned by most the governments for the reason that this attempt could be harmful for humanity and social responsibility. Therefore, if we could predict the results and if the result is controversial, it will be necessary for us to convert the investment.
Secondly, pursuing advancement of knowledge is some kind of luxurious when most of the people in this country are in the states of poverty, delinquency, and suffering from the war, pollution and epidemics. It is the society’s duty to guarantee the well-being of the people, then, money spent on researches seems not necessary comparing with those problems of survival. What could be solved by researches are mostly academic issues that may not be badly needed in the meantime. Moreover, they can not solve the long-term, deep-rooted social problems like the great gap between the rich and the poor and racial discrimination. Thus, some immediate social troubles referring to basic human rights have nothing to do with advancement exploration; we should use the money to develop economy, lifting people’s living standard.
In sum, it is normal for researches to have some unexpected results and it is understandable for most of the governments invest big money on researches to make long-term happiness for their people. But, those decisions should be made through severe concern and relying on the situation of the country. After all, we will not waste the money on things that are destined to fail knowingly, and we cannot be happy by fulfilling our appetite of knowledge without satisfying our stomach.
