167A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.

*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.

38The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.

"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

1.        领导者坚定自己目标很重要。首先，坚定自己目标是一个领导人威信authority的体现，随风逐流全听取别人会让下面员工或市民失去自己的信任。其次，领导往往有众人所没有的远见，需要力排众议执行自己的策略。Seward, Secretary of U.S purchase Alaska，开始被很多人反对，但后来这里发现了石油，同时也被作为重要军事基地。
2.        但领导人的目标有时是错的，需要客观听取下属的意见。
3.        有些目标在设定之初是对的，但随着形势的发展，需要适当改变目标。先经济发展，遇到环境问题，提出可持续发展战略。

1.        现代生活越来越便利和奢华。便利：蒸汽机让人摆脱繁重劳动；电话缩短人的距离；电视给人丰富生活；因特网加快信息查询；机动车让人远行方便。奢华：以前人们饥不择食，现在不仅吃得饱，而且可以吃各种山珍海味。
2.        便利的生活下人们会不独立。过分依赖机动车，人们步行变少，变得肥胖、虚弱；过分依赖电脑，人们变得不想计算和记忆。过分依赖这些便利条件，一旦便利条件出问题，人们的生活就会一团糟。电厂发生事故给生活生产带来不便。计算机坏了资料丢失。
3.        奢华的生活下人们不独立。有些人中了彩票lottery以后，变得懒惰，不去工作。有些富豪给孩子留很少的钱，让孩子独立生活
4.        是人类自己的价值观决定是否独立。

1.30人样本太少
RS：这30人对薰衣草没有排斥react negative to sth. ;30人只代表了一种失眠情况（身体状况），而没有另一种失眠情况（由于压力大导致的失眠）
2.第3周好转的原因也许不是薰衣草
RS：前两周对实验室情况不熟悉，后来熟悉了；前两周没睡好，很疲惫，第3周就会想睡，但后面就难以保证了
3.Even if第3周好转的原因是由于薰衣草，但短期好转不等于治愈了失眠
RS：这些人是长期失眠，以后会不会失眠？；在离开薰衣草的情况下会不会也不失眠？

1.EM地区的人少去看医生的原因不一定是吃鱼
RS：看医生很花钱，自己买药；EM地区的人本身从事体力劳动perform heavy manual labor,身体好；EM地区的气候条件好，temperature range小。
2.Even if EM地区的人少看医生与吃鱼有关，但吃鱼的效果不能等同于吃鱼油
RS：抗病物质在鱼的内脏里internal organs；这种抗病物质在炼制refine鱼油时被破坏
3.Even if I地区的人吃了鱼油后感冒少了，但旷工率不会下降
RS：这个鱼油会不会有副作用（失眠insomnia,食欲不佳Inappetence，精神疲惫mental fatigue，即便现在没有危害，但以后会引起其他疾病）；even if没有副作用，大部分人是假装生病fake illness
