“The study of history places too much emphasis on individual. The most significant events and trends in history are made possible not by the famous few, but by group of people whose identities have long been forgotten.”


The author asserts that group of people possibly made the most grand events and trends in history, but the posterity only remembers the names of the famous few instead. It might be tempting to agree with the author on the basis that faceless people exerted great influence on the impulse to the history. However, the famous few also have the necessity of existence, especially during the crucial period in history.
First of all, group of people owing to their unmeasured potential could actually impact some significant events and trends. And without such a strong power, many surprising wonders, such as constructions, could not be set up. For example, to build the Great Wall in China, it used thousands of nameless common people, but not the famous few. However without correct leading, great potential does not really mean the necessity to change the history. It’s just like the nuclear energy representing the huge power source. Some use it to make bombs (to destroy), while others just generate electrical power with it (to produce). This depends on who controls and leads the power, the group of people.
In addition, due to probability of leader in the society, it decides that only few people could grasp the opportunity to be a leader. Such a person, need to solidify all the group of people to build up a coherent power. For example, Mao, the famous Chinese chairman of PRC, expelled Japanese enemy during the WW II, depending on the formidable supports from common Chinese people. Whether effectively utilize the potential of group of people, it might be the most crucial respect to judge of a leader.
On the other hand, during the whole process of significant events and trends, each participant makes different efforts and possesses different values. If could calculate the individual value accurately, despite the practical difficulty, we would find that the value of the leader – famous few, is still much higher the average one. However, without the effort of group of people, or with weaker support from group of people, even the most brilliant leader still could not make the significant events and trends alone.
In sum, the successful leadership of famous few and the unmeasured power of group of people can be considered as the necessity to make the grand events and trends. Both of them cannot be ignored. Furthermore,
