It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data.
Is it true that theorizing before one has data is a grave mistake？ The author claims so. With the opinion data is the only factor required to theorize. As far as I concerned, there is no doubt that a theory without any flaw is based on the accurate data. However, not all theories are established on the theories. It is likely that one can be able to theorize before has data by logical reasoning, scientific assumptions and suppose.

Admittedly, data plays a vital part in theorizing. The accurate and ample data could lay a strong foundation for theory. Without data, the idea is unconvincing and questioned by most people. Data provides clear evidence and information to support a theory. In the realm of social sciences as well as economics, it is necessary for them to theorize with data. A new economical theory is stated in the Wealth of Nations written by Adarn Smith that is a product of much data such as descriptions, historical accounts, and recommendations. On the contrary, in art profession, data is not the essence for a theory. The most important thing for an art theory is inspiration and imagination form the people’s mind.

In modern society, with the rapid development of the science and technology, internet is changing our life which makes people easier to get data to do some studies. While in the past, the all countries in the world are almost in a closed state without little communication with outsides result form lacking technology and traffic tool. So people theorize by thinking, reasoning and assuming more than data which is hardly to get .But we deny that there are many new theory originating in that time before have data. For example, great philosopher Plato raises his theory just through thinking, reasoning and assumptions from the daily life. Though data is very significant , it is unfair to regard it as the only way to theorize.

Additionally, too much emphasis on the data has a negative effect on the development of the science and technology. As result of it, Scientist will do more research so that they can guarantee the number of data , which will waste a lot of time and money .Scientists will be afraid to if they should state their new idea just because of lacking data.


In sum , we should take a cautious and careful attitude toward for science study. We also can not ignore the function of data. Establishing a theory is a complex procedure that includes many factors except data .
