The author's assertion that it is only their descendents, rather than their contemporaries, that can have the greatness of individuals decided. However, as for me, I tend to contend that the greatness of individuals can be decided by both their contemporaries and those living after them.

To begin with, the true situations of individuals can be remained to the greatest degree once they are recorded authentically by their contemporaries. Taking China's greatest novel A Dream of Red Mansions for example, the masterpiece, composed by Cao Xueqin who lived in the Qing Dynasty, has caused studies of the Hongloumeng to form. Although Cao’s novel was well-known, little is known about his poetry, most of those that Hongloumeng scholars has known about Cao Xuqin as a poet was from remarks made by Cao's friend Zhi Yanzhai, one of whose comments was that Cao Xueqin should enjoy the same fame with Li Bai, who is the greatest poet in China’s history. Consequently, sometimes the firsthand material of individuals can be acquired most easily by their contemporaries, thus the greatness of historical figures determined.

Furthermore, people usually understand how things actually stand only after years of their occurrence when believable evidences come. For example, Lance Amstrong, who overcame cancer and won the Tour de France for seven consecutive years, used to be considered as the most inspirational sports figure on the planet and inspired millions of people who had watched him on TV or heard of his story. Nevertheless, the hero's name was tarnished after being reported by France sports daily I'Equipe last year that he took blood-boosting drugs EPO and tested positive six times in 1999, when he got his first Tour de France champion. Although Amstong had rebuked all the charges leveled against him, it remained to be seen whether he was innocent or not. Hence, it is safe to say that the historical position of an individual can not be finally established until persuasive evidences are acquired.

In addition, it is common especially in ancient times that nobody take the responsibility of judging their contemporaries. So it becomes necessary for specialists living after these famous historical figures to comment upon them through limited evidences such as historical records or studies of archaeology. Sima Qian, the grand historian living in Han Dynasty, finished the book Shi Ji, or Records of the Historian, which contains many biographical chapters on emperors, leuds and ministers living in the period from the Five Sages of prehistoric times to Han Dynasty of Sima Qian's own time and is instrumental for the people nowadays to understand the early history of China. As a result, our attitudes toward such men of times as Xiang Yu, Qin Shihuang are mainly influenced by Sima Qian, the historian living after them.

To sum up, from my point of view, it is a two-step job to judge the historical position of an individual--acquisition of the firsthand materials of the person and appropriate comment based on the materials. Therefore, it can be concluded that the greatness of an individual can be decided by their descendents as well as their contemporaries, when someone excellently finished the two-step job.

Consequently, sometimes the firsthand material of individuals can be acquired most easily by their contemporaries, thus the greatness of historical figures determined. (说明同代人的优势)

Furthermore, people usually understand how things actually stand only after years of their occurrence when (until)believable evidences come. For example, Lance Amstrong, who overcame cancer and won the Tour de France for seven consecutive years, used to be considered as the most inspirational sports figure on the planet and inspired millions of people who had watched him on TV or heard of his story. Nevertheless, the hero's name was tarnished after being reported by France sports daily I'Equipe last year that he took blood-boosting drugs EPO and (were)tested positive six times in 1999, when he got his first Tour de France champion. Although Amstong had rebuked all the charges leveled against him, it remained to be seen whether he was innocent or not. Hence, it is safe to say that the historical position of an individual can not be finally established until persuasive evidences are acquired.(同代人的劣势?)

In addition, it is common especially in ancient times that nobody take the responsibility of judging their contemporaries. So it becomes necessary for specialists living after these famous historical figures to comment upon them through limited evidences such as historical records or studies of archaeology. Sima Qian, the grand(gradeur) historian living in Han Dynasty, finished the book Shi Ji, or Records of the Historian, which contains many biographical chapters on emperors, leuds and ministers living in the period from the Five Sages of prehistoric times to Han Dynasty of Sima Qian's own time and is instrumental for the people nowadays to understand the early history of China. Therefore, it can be concluded that the greatness of an individual can be decided by their descendents as well as their contemporaries, when someone excellently finished the two-step job.
开头和结尾不错,但中间的论证段好象有点问题。
你的例子很有特点

结构很好,例子有特色。
The author's assertion that it is only their descendents, rather than their contemporaries, that (去掉)can have the greatness of individuals decided.

Consequently, sometimes the firsthand material of individuals can be acquired most easily by their contemporaries, thus the greatness of historical figures determined.

Furthermore, people usually understand how things actually stand only after years of their occurrence when believable evidences(不可数) come. For example, Lance Amstrong, who overcame cancer and won the Tour de France(什么用法?法语吗佩服) for seven consecutive years, used to be considered as the most inspirational sports figure on the planet and inspired millions of people who had watched(观看?观察?用seen就行) him on TV or heard of his story. Nevertheless,(不管怎么说的意思,用在此处不恰当,用however之类好些) the hero's name was tarnished after being reported by France sports daily I'Equipe last year that he took blood-boosting drugs EPO and tested positive six times in 1999, when he got his first Tour de France champion. Although Amstong had rebuked all the charges leveled against him, it remained to be seen whether he was innocent or not. Hence, it is safe to say that the historical position of an individual can not be finally established until persuasive evidences(不可数) are acquired.(后半段不懂,个人污点怎么证明分论点?)

In addition, it is common (加逗号)especially in ancient times (加逗号,不然看不懂)that nobody take the responsibility of judging their contemporaries. So it becomes necessary for specialists living after these famous historical figures to comment upon them through limited evidences such as historical records or studies of archaeology. Sima Qian, the grand historian living in Han Dynasty, finished the book Shi Ji, or Records of the Historian, which contains many biographical chapters on emperors, leuds and ministers living in the period from the Five Sages of prehistoric times to Han Dynasty of Sima Qian's own time and is instrumental for the(去掉the) people nowadays to understand the early history of China. As a result, our attitudes toward such men of times as Xiang Yu, Qin Shihuang(说明他们是有争议的历史人物,不然老外不懂) are mainly influenced by Sima Qian, the historian living after them.

NIFAt的修改

The author's assertion that it is only their descendents, rather than their contemporaries, that can have the greatness of individuals decided. However, as for me(for me就很好啦,或者as far as I am concerned, as for me好像有点没对), I tend to contend that the greatness of individuals can be decided by both their contemporaries and those living after them.

(这句里仿佛有不只一个句子结构)Consequently, sometimes the firsthand material of individuals can be acquired most easily by their contemporaries, thus the greatness of historical figures determined. (总结得好)

Furthermore, people usually understand how things actually stand only after years of their occurrence when believable evidences come. For example, Lance Amstrong, who overcame cancer and won the Tour de France for seven consecutive years, used to be considered as the most inspirational(这个是想表达激励的意思吧?那么似乎inspiring好些,inspirational是给予灵感的意思呢) sports figure on the planet and inspired(上句才用过~) millions of people who had watched him on TV or heard of his story. Nevertheless, the hero's name was tarnished after being reported by France sports daily I'Equipe last year that he took blood-boosting drugs EPO and tested positive six times in 1999, when he got his first Tour de France champion. Although Amstrong had rebuked all the charges leveled against him, it remained to be seen whether he was innocent or not.

写得很好~~不过用太多中国例子,还是有风险的啊~~
