In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.

正文(598):

The speaker contends that reading books is not as important as it once was since people can learn as much from watching television as they can by reading books. I concede that we can learn a lot from television, but it is too limited. Reading books, as another means of learning, should not be substituted.

Incontestably, there are many advantages in learning from watching television. In the first place, television has sounds, colors, vivid pictures and real scene. What is abstract and difficult for us to understand becomes easy through the television, which has showed us the arcane of nature, the processes of experiments or surgery and so on. Without regard to television, we have to arduously understand or image the descriptions of the books. In the second place, the television's contents update rapidly and cover with almost all the fields, thus we can gain the newest and the maximum knowledge in a short time. In this respect, it is an effective and efficient way to learn and can helps us save much time. However, the television also has many defects that it cannot overcome due to its own property---television serves as entertainment primarily and its ultimate aim is to gain profits. What might attract fewer audiences is impossible to play in TV. In addition, if we want to learn something more deep and systemically, watching television cannot satisfy with our requirements because of its terseness, generalization and limited time. And furthermore, television lacks of repetition, usually we cannot review the knowledge learned from television if we want to.

Learning by reading books just can make up the defects of learning form television. In library, we can find out books in all fields no matter this field is popular or not. And a theory can be explained in one books, or even in several books so that we can understand the theory more deep and systemically. What's more, we can read a book repeatedly if we love the book or cannot understand completely. The advantages of learning by reading books are not just what I have said above. Reading books makes great contribution to explore the reader's thought rather than to gain information. It requires us to think independently since letters are abstract symbols and nobody explains to us, otherwise we cannot understand what the books describe. Hence, we not only acquire much knowledge but also learn how to think. In this regard, there is no substitute for reading books. Moreover, books are more portable than television sets. They can be brought to the place where you want to go, cannot break, and do not depend on electricity, batteries or access to airwaves or cable connections. Yet reading books does not possess the advantages of learning by watching television.

Form the discussion above, we know that both watching television and reading books have their own advantages and disadvantages, they are different but complementary. Books are planar while the television is three-dimensional; books are dull and abstruse while television is vivid and effortless; books are detailed, complex, precise and deep while television is terse, broad, direct and improvisational. They are two types of learning method and cannot substitute for each other.

In sum, it is unreasonable to learn only from watching television or reading books. Which kinds of ways can be used is depending on our needs: if we just would like to know something broadly, we can learn from television; if we want to acquire deeper and more systemic knowledge, we should read books, and can appeal to television in case that book are abstruse to understand.

The speaker contends that reading books is not as important as it once was since people can learn as much from watching television as they can by reading books. Incontestably, there are many advantages in learning from watching television. In the first place, television has sounds, colors, vivid pictures and real scene. What might attract fewer audiences is impossible to play(be shown/broadcasted) in(on) TV. In addition, if we want to learn something more deep and systemically, watching television cannot satisfy with our requirements because of its terseness, generalization and limited time. And furthermore, television lacks of 去掉 repetition, since usually we cannot review the knowledge learned from television if we want to.

Learning by reading books just can make up for the defects shortcomings of learning form television. In library, we can find out books in all fields no matter this field is 去掉popular or not. Yet reading books does not possess the advantages of learning by watching television.

What is abstract and difficult for us to understand becomes easy through(through改为by watching) the(去掉the) television, which has showed us the arcane of nature, the processes of experiments or surgery and so on. Without regard to television, we have to arduously understand or image(image是名词改为 imagine) the descriptions of the books. In the second place, the television's contents update the television's contents改为the contents of television is updated)rapidly and cover with almost all the fields, thus we can gain the newest and the maximum (我觉得and 连接两个最高级 maximum->most 但又觉得 most放着不太合适)knowledge in a short time. In this respect, it is an effective and efficient way to learn and can helps us save much time. However, the television also has many defects that it cannot overcome(be overcomed) due to its own property---television serves as entertainment primarily and its ultimate aim is to gain profits. What might attract fewer audiences is impossible(前面fewer已经否定了,这是不是possible 就行了,我不确定阿) to play in TV. In addition, if we want to learn something more deep and systemically, watching television cannot satisfy with(去掉with) our requirements because of its terseness, generalization (你的词我没看懂,好像regular好一些)and limited time. And(去掉and) furthermore, television lacks of(去掉of) repetition, usually we cannot review the knowledge learned from television if we want to. (usually是adv,这两个分句缺个连词,也可以把前半句放后面+because/in that )

Learning by(去掉learning by) reading books just(去掉just)can make up(加for)the defects(建议换一个 如disvantages  我也知道俗,但跟前面不重为好) of learning form(小笔误无所谓from) television. In (加the), library, we can find out books in all fields no matter this field is popular or not. And a theory can be explained in one books( a  book), or even in several books so that we can understand the theory more deep and systemically. What's more, we can read a book repeatedly if we love the book or cannot understand completely. The advantages of learning by reading books are not just what I have said above. Reading books makes (加a)great contribution to explore(exploring) the reader's thought(thoughts) rather than(not just 我不确定但总觉得后面不应该否定掉)to gain information. It requires us to think independently since letters are abstract symbols and nobody explains to us, otherwise we cannot understand what the books describe. Hence, we not only acquire much knowledge but also learn how to think. In this regard, there is no substitute for reading books. Moreover, books are more portable than television sets. They can be brought to the place where you want to go, cannot break, and do not depend on electricity, batteries or access to airwaves or cable connections.(我觉得你学以致用的能力太强了,向你学习) Yet reading books does not possess the advantages of learning by watching television.

Form(小笔误无所谓from) the discussion above, we know that both watching television and reading books have their own advantages and disadvantages, they are different but complementary. Books are planar while the television is three-dimensional; books are dull and abstruse while television is vivid and effortless; books are detailed, complex, precise and deep while television is terse, broad, direct and improvisational. They are two types of learning method and cannot substitute for each other(向牛段致敬 !).

In sum, it is unreasonable to learn only from watching television or reading books. Which kinds of ways can be used is depending on our needs: if we just would like to know something broadly, we can learn from television; if we want to acquire deeper and more systemic knowledge, we should read books, and can appeal to television in case that book are abstruse to understand.(结尾我是菜鸟,我也不知道可不可以平衡,好像叶子说这样升华很好,那就应该没问题了,我只是不确定)
