In this article, the author infers that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months. To support his point view, the author gives the result of a survey showing that video-game players prefer games with lifelike graphics. In addition, the author points out the fact that Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old. However, this argumentation suffers from several critical flaws.

To begin with, the result of the survey the author mentioned is not reliable enough to convince us that lifelike graphics are the most important feature in video games. How many video game players take part in this survey? Can those people represent the whole group of video-game players? Both questions should be answered before we can conclude whether lifelike graphics are really important in video games. If there are other features much more important than lifelike graphics, then the base point of this argument faces great challenge and it is unwarranted to say that introducing video games with lifelike graphics will lead to the increase of sales of Whirlwind.

Secondly, granted that it is true that a majority of video-game players prefer such games, an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, who the author thinks are most likely to play video games, can’t necessarily help to increase the sales of Whirlwind. As the author describes, playing those video game with lifelike graphics requires most up-to-date computers, which must be quite expensive. It is obviously that people with age between 10 and 25, who are middle school students or collage students, can’t afford such expensive computers. However extensive the advertising campaign is and interesting the game may be, those people won’t buy such games due to economic limits.

Thirdly, the author attributes the main reason why the sales of Whirlwind declined during the past two years to its not providing video game with lifelike graphic, which is inadequate. Possibly there are several other factors makes the sales decrease, for instance, maybe the price of video game provided by Whirlwind being much higher than that of other companies and the sales strategies of Whirlwind being improperly. Both should be taken into account and ruled out before the author can present his conclusion.
Lastly, the author’s assumption that Whirlwind’s introducing several games providing lifelike graphics with an extensive advertising campaign will necessarily increase the sales of this company in the next few months is groundless. How can we say this if we don’t have the knowledge that whether other campaigning companies have already provided or are providing such games with lower prices? Only after we are convinced that Whirlwind’s products are the only choices of video-game players, can we reasonably get this conclusion.

So, the reasoning in this argument can’t lead us to the ultimate conclusion presented in it. The credibility of the survey should be enhanced and other factors which will hamper the increase of sales of Whirlwind should be considered before the author can convince us that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months.

[我个人觉得argument没有把销售降低归结于没推出lifelike graphic]
