Issue47: 421 words
Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect—that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills.
The speaker argues that the society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect, such as reasoning and other cognitive skills. In my perspective, the non-intellective skills which include the practical working experience, cultivation of moral standard and the appreciation of the world are the indispensable abilities for us and of great significance which worthy to be specially focused, while the intellective area is also a necessity of every individual in the society.
Firstly, the non-intellective skills of every individual are the most vital factor for us to compete in contemporary society, which is full of competition and stress. To demonstrate this point evidently, here is an example that is very convincing, and, is about the job hunters. Actually, whether in the eastern or western countries, the employers always place more emphasis on the experiences rather than the diploma which indicates your intellect. They might hire a skilled worker without any diploma instead of a college graduate with no working experience, for the reason that the direct working experience means the better understanding about the job so that the employee will know what to do and how to do it properly.
Not only does the non-intellective skill play a very important role to individuals, but also it is significant to society's harmony, which is depended on the moral standard. It is the cultivation of the family, school and society in the area of non-intellective subjects that helps us build our moral standard. Through those learning, we know the world better, which help us form the sense to clearly distinguish the right from wrong, which can not be given by the intellects of persons, and which is the very important ability that every individual should have.
On the other hand, however, it is not advisable to over-focused on the non-intellective skills, in that we can not handle things only by the cognitive skills, which will lead us to a limited thought and with no innovation. In that case, the society will stop the pace of development. Therefore, the intellect, which is also a necessity, also plays a very significant role in our personal abilities. The universal educational system is an obvious illustration that reflects the society's emphasis on this aspect.
To sum up, the non-intellective skills should be set enough emphasis on for they are both valuable to the individuals and the society, while the intellective skills embracing the reasoning and other cognitive skills are also have much importance which can not be neglected by the contemporary society.
