50.From a draft textbook manuscript submitted to a publisher.

"As Earth was being formed out of the collision of space rocks, the heat from those collisions and from the increasing gravitational energy of the planet made the entire planet molten, even the surface. Any water present would have evaporated and gone off into space. As the planet approached its current size, however, its gravitation became strong enough to hold gases and water vapor around it as an atmosphere. Because comets are largely ice made up of frozen water and gases, a comet striking Earth then would have vaporized. The resulting water vapor would have been retained in the atmosphere, eventually falling as rain on the cooled and solidified surface of Earth. Therefore, the water in Earth's oceans must have originated from comets."

In the argument, the author concludes that the water in Earth's oceans is come from comets. To substantiate his conclusion, the author points out that the gravitation of planet can hold gases and water vapor around as an atmosphere when the planet approached its current size. In addition, the author assumes that comets have struck Earth. Careful scrutiny of this supporting evidence, however, reveals that it lends little credible support to the author's conclusion.
The threshold problem with this argument is that the author assumes without justification that the comets have struck the Earth.  Yet the author provides no evidence to support this assumption. It is possible that the comets have never struck the Earth. Without eliminating this possibility, the author cannot confidently conclude that comets is the origin of water in Earth's oceans.
However, even if it is true that comets have struk Earth, the argument remains questionable. By relying on the fact that comets are largely ice made up of frozen water and gases, the argument depends on the assumption that comets have formed the water after striking Earth. However, the author fails to provide any evidence to support this conclusion. Perhaps, the comets decomposed into other kind of thing, when or after striking Earth instead of vaporizing into the atmosphere and eventually falling as rain on the cooled surface of Earth. Since the author has failed to consider and rule out this possibility, the author’s assertion  that comets lead to the formation of Earth’s ocean.
Finally, the author fails to rule out alternative explanations. For example, the volcanic eruption leads to some kind of material coming into being water which afterward consist of ocean. It might also be the case that there were other kind of planet striking Earth and as a consequence of the formation of Earth's oceans, rather than comets.
In summary, the argument, while it seems logical at first glance, has several flaws as discussed above therefore unconvincing. The argument could be improved by providing evidence that comets have indeed struck Earth. It could be further improved by ruling out alternative explanations for the supposed origins of water in Earth's ocean.

个人认为这篇argu有一个潜在的假设——before Earth is big enough to hold the water vapor which is originated from comets’ ice ( the arguer’s assertion) , all the water on the surface of Earth is evaporated.呵呵~ 个人认为这个的漏洞可以攻击下。
