Argument140.
The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty
Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has
proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes
are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity
among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in
research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years.
Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and
research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a
promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion,
we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another
college."

The conclusion that the arguer claim in this argument is that Elm City University prepares to give $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson for Professor Thomas. To support the conclusion, the arguer points out several evidences. In addition, the arguer believes without a raise and promotion, Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college. At first glance, the arguer’s assumption seems to be accepted, while clearly exam the arguer’s assumption, we may find that it is unconvincing, oversimplified, and unwarranted. The argument contains several faces that are questionable.

To begin with, the arguer makes an oversimplified analogy between the number of the students of her classes and her popularity among students. In most instances, this is unwarranted assumption for the simple reason that things rarely remain the same over extended period. As we know, many factors should be taken into the consideration, such as the percent of her students in all students of Elm City University. The university may have many different kinds of classes in which there are fewer students than her, yet her classes are just one of them. What’s more, her course is more important than any other foundational course so that any one have to learn it. Thus, the arguer said the reason her classes are among the largest at the university can not to demonstrate her popularity among students. In the same time it can not help for proving herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000.

Secondly, even she is famous teacher, the arguer do not provide enough information to prove the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. The arguer’s evidences are insufficient to support Professor Thomas is well worth her annual salary. The great Mathematician and physicist—Newton, said “If I have seen further than certain other men, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. Sometimes the study of history places too much emphasis on individuals.

In addition, one major flaw that weakens the consequence of this argument is that Professor Thomas will likely leave Elm City University for another college, even though the university provides a raise and promotion for her. If Professor Thomas paid all attentions on her research but not salary, she can give up high salary leaving Elm City University for another college which can provide her better condition for her research. Therefore, the arguer gives us a cause-effect fallacy.

To sum up, the conclusion reached in this argument is lacking of credibility so that it is not persuasive at it stands. Regardless of who the arguer is, he or she has overlooked or chosen to ignore many aspects of his or her conclusion. To strengthen the argument, we would need more information about Professor Thomas is well worth her annual salary of $50,000.

个人认为,这题目有三个假设:PT优秀的teaching and research abilities,以及她会走。你在质疑第二个假设的时候,除了money的批驳,还可以举出例子对她abilities的批驳。举出Newton的例子,个人觉得有点走issue路子了???
