01/26/07: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In today's world, to speak well is more important than to write well. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Which one plays a more significant role in modern society, to speak well or to write well? Different options are chose by people based on their personal experiences and characteristics. In my opinion, I agree with the point that to speak well is more important than to write well in today’s world.
One compelling reason supporting my point is that people who speak well hold more influence in decision making than people write well. To begin with, speaking refers to speech, conversation, and other forms; all of these to some extent can actually affect one’s decisions regarding important things. When it comes to speech, the United States presidential election is an apt example. In today’s multimedia era, almost every person can access to televisions or the Internet, therefore it is next to impossible that a candidate who only writes well can win the election. In fact, all the final winners in this election are those who good at speech, they earn the loyalty, trust, and supports from electorate with their skillful and passionate speeches. In a sense, the speeches affect people’s decisions, help the candidates win their elections. As for conversation, it functions in similar way, but always between several persons who know each other well. For instance, a conversation between a father and a son about selecting a major for the son. Suppose the father is good at communication and expression, then the conversion may actually help the son make his decision. To the contrary, a father who writes well but not speaks well can hardly help. In sum, a person who speaks well has the ability to affect others in making decisions, if he utilizes it in appropriate ways, it will benefit himself, others, or both. Therefore to speak well is more important than to write well in today’s world.
An additional reason is that to speak well can hold more influence of emotion than to write well. As we know, modern society is full of fierce competitions, therefore many people live under huge mental pressures. Suppose a person who is good at speaking and communication, she is more helpful with people in dealing with problems such as depression and other mental pressures. While a person who only writes well cannot help much. To sum up, to speak well is more useful in today’s world.
In conclusion, although writing still stands for an important role in modern society, it is less useful and valuable in various aspects compared to speaking. Therefore to speak well is more important than to write well in most cases.
