Issue152:The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies.
In today's commercial society, most of the corporate executives focus their eyes on how much profit they can make for their companies. It is true that making money is the direct and foremost goal that an corporate executive should pursue. But I cannot agree with the speaker that it is the only responsibility of them, which means money is everything.
On the one hand, I concede that without making profit a company cannot survive in our society with fierce competition since money is the momentous element to run a corporation. After all, corporation is not a charity institution that means providing products or service to the public for free. A company, which has to pay the salary to its employees, to contribute tax to its nation, has to make as much money as possible by selling their products, whatever they are. Any manager or administrator in a company should try their best to improve efficiency and implement effective plans to expand their profits. Any executive who ignores this essential requirement would surely run a risk of bankruptcy sooner or later.
On the other hand, we should ask that what is the ultimate goal of running a corporation? Definitely, it is quite superficial to attribute the answer to making money alone. There are more meaningful social responsibilities and obligations that an executive should hold accountable. First of all, the meaning of one company's existence should beyond just making money for the company itself. What's of more importance is to provide high quality products or service to the public. Dell, the president of Dell computer corporation in America, said "I have not paid too much time to how much money I have made, what I care is that whether most of people in the market are using the computers marked the brand of Dell." Obviously, the source of his satisfaction comes from the service and product that his corporation provided to the society rather than the money itself. Actually, profit is the son of higher quality, more advanced, more convenient products and service one company can provide to customers.
In addition, the meaning of one company's existence in a society lies in its social responsibilities. For example: a company should provide job opportunities to the public, helping the nation to solve the problem of unemployment. To trim down its employees in order for a higher profit is always the last choice of one company just when it confronts the hazard of bankruptcy. Furthermore, there are some national unique industries in nearly every nation that never be allowed to be merged by some multination barons at the expense of the sacrifice of a national brand just because the mergence can make more money. On the contrary, those executives who only focus their eyes on the profit would be adventurous to do anything to make more money, which would risk of harming our society by taking advantage of the void of the current law system. Because they regard making money is the overriding priority in their eyes.
In sum, an corporate executive's responsibility should not limited in making as much money as possible since the ultimate goal of one company's existence does not rest on money alone but to make human's life more convenient, more comfortable. Therefore, many other significant social responsibilities should be taken into consideration as well.
