Education is the media the society takes advantage of to transform culture and knowledge from one generation to another. Meanwhile, the speaker claims that education is also a primary tool used by a culture to perpetuate the ideas favors and discredit the ideas it fears. As far as I am concerned, I fundamentally disagree with the speaker.
Admittedly, as education is always controlled by governments, hardly can it avoid the political influence over what should taught and what should not. In the Han Dynasty of ancient China, for instance, the emperor LiuChe adopted DongZhongshu's suggestion "abolishing all other schools and advocating Confucianism exclusively". That's because the Confucianism promoted the idea that all people should absolutely obey to their emperor, which was strictly accord to the emperor's interests. Such policy leaded to in that times all the schools inculcated students with Confucianism while other ideas were hardly remembered by people. Formal education, primarily the schooling, in any time has its own boundaries which is strictly accord with the basic principles of society. Even in modern democratic society, there is no likely for high school students to find out in their classes the truth of political problems of their community.
However, this role所指好像不太明确 is not lies on the nature of education, to some extent, even conflicts with the nature of education. I concede that students were indoctrinated knowledge at primary school. And as lacking enough intellectual capacity and real-world experience, they only passively accept ideas, values and principles of mainstream society. However, the mission of university and college is to help students to establish their own judge standard and cultivate the ability of critical analysis and skepticism. Then they will check the ideas, values and attitudes indoctrinated by teachers with their own judge standard. At the same time, they will begin to acknowledge certain ideas which are prohibited in formal education.
For example, In Bruno's era, the religious community was in charge of the social thinking, and promoted the idea that the earth was the center of the universe. However, Bruno firmly claimed that the universe is infinite without giving any regard to the threat to his life. So in my view, formal education is a miner one through which a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears.
Meanwhile, the speaker is in total ignorant 好像有点绝对,题目只是说是primarily,你所谓的其他重要手段是与正规教育平行的呢?还是有主有辅呢? of other significant means by which a culture attains the same ends. One is the system of laws which is established by legislators and implemented by government in order to regular people’s behaviors and maintain stabilize of the society. Through punishing those who deviate from it, it effectively guides the official notion of society. Another means is mainstream media and the censorship. In modern society, media profoundly affects people’s ideas, views and attitudes. And through censorship, government successfully lead media to promote ideas it favors and deny the ideas it fears. Mutual efforts of mainstream media and censorship play an important role in perpetuating the ideas a culture favors and discrediting the ideas a culture fears.这一段的套路有点眼熟,好像是某个成型的提纲上提到的
In conclusion, formal education is a primary media to transform culture and knowledge. It effectively transforms a student from ignorant to open-minded. Yet, formal education is not a primary way by which a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears. 有点困惑,a primary media 和a primary way 的区别是什么呢?感觉上是一个是具体的说法一个是抽象的说法,为什么说formal education is a primary media but not a primary way? |
