“There is no such thing as purely objective observation. All observations are subjective; they are always guided by the observer’s expectations or desires.”
Is observation objective or subjective? The speaker claims that all observations, guided by the observer’s expectations or desires, are subjective. However, in my view, there is not an easy conclusion to this question. When judging an observation to be objective or subjective, we have to see both sides of the coin.
To begin with, I concede that in our daily life, the majority of our observations are subjective due to our expectations or desires. As it删 is known, the behavior of observing was born with us when we were infants这句话有问题吧~~~, and as soon as we reached the world, we began to observe the outsides in our own way of thinking. That is the reason accounting for why living in the same circumstance, every individual forms his or her own ideology which varies from any other’s. It is a matter of fact that in our common life when facing the same incidents, the observations and reflections vary greatly from individual to individual. For example, when it is raining, the farmers may be joyful for the rain would bring them a great harvest, while the office workers may complain for the traffic jam it would bring; facing the same difficulties, the optimistic ones may say this is another challenge for him or her, while the pessimistic ones may cry for the bad fortune; even for a girl, her boyfriend considers her the most beautiful, while other guys may think her just-so-so.这个表达太口语了啊~ Thus, we can see, in our daily life, based on different expectations or desires, the observations are subjective that varies from one to another.
In addition, when it comes to the art field including music, painting and literature, a subjective observation is also necessary. A true art, full of value, is absolutely the manifestation of the talent of the artist, the outpouring of subjective emotion and the overflow of the instantaneous inspiration. Thus, in front of the same art theme, two artists will very possibly produce two totally different productions. Similarly, the appreciation of art is the process of resonance between artist and appreciator, and different appreciators may give various evaluations toward one art due to their expectations, desires, values and experience.前面有过艺术领域的例子我觉得挺好的,不过后面鉴赏这部分似乎主要说的是评价的主观性,如果说与论点有关系也应该更明确的表达一下~
However, excluding the above aspects, we should take more situations into consideration. In science field, an objective observation is requisite at any time. The world is consisted of objective existences which are existing and developing in the orbits of some certain principles, rules and axioms that could never deviate under anyone’s own expectations or desires.意思是不是有些矛盾了?事物发展的轨迹永不会背离人们的期望?? Hence, when scientists are doing scientific research, they have to comply with these principles and objectively observe and record the data and calculate out the result. Otherwise, if a scientist in a research subjectively depends on his or her own expectations and desires, the outcomes would not be accurate and correct. In the dominant of judicature, we also have to insist on objective observation. Although the legislations like laws, rules and bans are established by certain institutions according to the majority’s interests, which is subjective on some extent, we have to execute them with objective observations due to the legislation’s essential quality of justice and equality. The personal emotions such like expectations, desires and prejudice are all harmful in execution which may lead to disharmony and even disturbance of society. Therefore, in these areas, objective observations are necessary.
To sum up, we can not generally claim that all observations are subjective because of expectations and desires. In some areas like our common life and art, the subjective observation is advocated; while in some other areas like the science and legislation, observation should be objective. |
