------题目------
The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
'Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores.'
------正文------
In this argument , the author suggest that they should increase their stock of home office machines and office supplies in order to improve the sales of the office-supply departments and lead it to be the most profitable component of the stores .The argument is basically rely on a survey which says that the majority of the respondents are required to take more work home than the past . The argument seems reasonable at the first glance , however , after a scrutiny ,we will find out that there are several fallacies in the conclusion .
First of all , the survey cited in the argument is too vague for us to believe . How the survey is conducted and pursued ? how many people take the survey ? What do the respondents do? Unfortunately , we can not find any information about the procedure of the survey and the background of the respondents . It is possible that the survey is conducted in another state of the country whose economy situation is totally different from this state. Maybe most people in this state do farm work and few people do the office work. In that case , the survey even the office supply seem meaningless to the people here .Given that the object of the survey is in the same state , it is also possible that the respondents are only a little friction of the whole population thus makes the survey lack the representative .
Secondly , there is another question the arthor ignores , do those people who take work home need those office machines. Since nowadays most work is done with computer , it is likely that all the staff those people need is a computer but not printers , small copy machines , paper shredders and likewise as the author cited in the argument . In that case , solely increase of the office supplies will not lead to the increase of the profit or even conversely cause the sales a sharp decline.
Finally , even the facts that more people take work home and do need all those staff are true , it does not automatically mean that they will buy the staff in Valu-Mart stores . There is a lot of stores which also sell that kind of office-supplies. If the store want to make profits in these staff , they have to think of other attractions to make customs choose their stores . For example , the delivery service may help them in some sense . What's more , they can advertise for their products demonstrating the price and quality of the products as well. Only in that way may the Walu-Mart stores increase their sales in the office-supply departments .
To sum up, the business manager may have to reconsider his decision to increase the office-supplies in their stores if they want to improve their sales of the office-supply department . Rather than merely increase the stock of the home office machines , the stores have to first assess the credibility of the survey , and then try other useful and effctive efforts to attract customs.
