140.The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty
Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has
proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes
are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity
among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in
research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years.
Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and
research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a
promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion,
we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another
college."

提纲:1她的班级人数多并不能证明她的教学能力。(也许是由于她的课比较简单容易通过考试;还有可能是她的课可能是compulsory;)
2 她带给学校的研究捐助在过去两年超过了她的年薪,但是以前呢?而且以钱来衡量研究能力是可笑的。而且应该比较其他教授对学校做的贡献。
3 就算她的教学和研究能力得到肯定,但是提升为系主任也是没有根据的。系主任需要一定的管理能力。
4 没有证据说明不加薪她会离开Elm。(也许她并不太看重金钱;也许和其他教授比她的工资已经算高的了)
正文:
This report recommends that it is necessary to raise Professor Thomas’s annual salary and promote her to Department Chairperson. To support this recommendation, the author points out that Professor Thomas’s classes are among the largest at the university to illustrate her popularity among students. Also the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary last two years. Close scrutiny of each of these facts, however reveals that none of them lend credible support to this recommendation.

To begin with, the fact that her classes are one of the largest classes at the university could not guarantee her teaching ability. It is entirely possible that her class is easier than other classes to pass through in examination and therefore many students choose her class. Another possibility is that her class is one of the compulsory classes. Lacking the statistics of evaluating her teaching ability, the author’s conclusion is dubious at best.

In the second place, it is ridiculous to evaluate a teacher’s research ability with respect to the amount of money she contributes to the university. As a matter of fact, research ability is determined by many factors. For example, one factor is that whether the professor has potentials to contribute to some professional fields. Therefore the evidence that Professor Thomas has contributed money to university in research grants lends little support to the author’s claim. What is more, the author only cites the money Professor Thomas has brought to the university in each of the last two year. Perhaps Professor Thomas has not brought sufficient money to university in research grants the year before the last two years. Absent evidence of her contribution to university at other time, the author’s conclusion is untenable.

Thirdly, even if there is evidence to substantiate her teaching and research abilities, it is inappropriate to promote her to Department Chairperson without evaluation of her management capability. As we know, the status of Department Chairperson requires the ability of management. No evidence is offered to demonstrate Professor Thomas’s capability of management. Lacking such evidence, it is unfair to promote her to Department Chairperson.

Last but not the least the author unfairly assumes that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University without such raise and promotion. Even if Professor Thomas has such an excellent performance in Elm City University, maybe she does not think she should be raised and promoted. Perhaps she is satisfied with her annual salary and her status. In fact, the author fails to cite the annual salary of other professors at the university to compare with Thomas’s. It is entirely possible that 50000 dollars is a sufficiently high annual salary in Elm City University. Therefore the author’s conclusion is indefensible.

To sum up, this argument is logically flawed and therefore untenable as it stands. To strengthen it, the author must provide statistics to substantiate the real teaching and research ability of Professor Thomas. Moreover the author should cite the other time of money which Professor Thomas has brought to university in research grants. To better evaluate this argument, I would need to know the capability of Thomas’s management.

智恩这篇文章写的真好,首先我要说的式提纲,可以毫不夸张的说这是我见过的最棒的一个提纲,非常有条理且可以想象出作者批判它时的神情:撅着嘴,皱着眉,呵呵。fighting!

(很好的句式,尤其是这句dubious at best比那个用滥了的open to doubt/question好多了)

To sum up, this argument is logically flawed and therefore untenable as it stands. To strengthen it, the author must provide statistics to substantiate the real teaching and research ability of Professor Thomas. Moreover the author should cite the other time of money which Professor Thomas has brought to university in research grants.(这句话有点儿别扭,改成”cite the money in other time which professor has brought to university in research grants). To better evaluate this argument, I would (also)need to know the capability of Thomas’s management.
