ISSUE38
"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
Terminology:
as important as
as much as
分析第一个比较:not as important as 那么books以前的地位是如何的呢? 题目给了个限制:in the age of television,这个限制的用处就在第二句里面体现出来了---learn as much as。
With the coming of the age of television, many people believe, like the author, that television is totally able to substitute the position of the books in the process of learning. In asserting that television technique brings huge convenience, I agree that it is an alternative way for us to pick up information. Nevertheless, the speaker's affirmation that reading is becoming less important than it was carries certain unfair implications, which should be addressed.
Admittedly, television program holds certain advantages over books for its lively images. For the purpose of documenting and conveying temporal, spatial events and experiences, film and video generally provide a more accurate and convincing record than a book or other written account. For instance, I think no child in China will deny much of our knowledge about the wild animals; about the variety of insets only found in Amazon River drainage area; and about the flowers blooming on an island of Pacific Ocean is mainly coming from one famous program called “The world of animal", not from the description of the cyclopedia. And furthermore, recent investigations on through which means people prefer to get information show that over half of the visited ones choose the video and radio as the first and second choices, rather than reading printing accounts. It is likely that a modern person would like being separated from the earth without the television.
However, the speaker overlooks several respects in which books are inherently superior to television as a medium for learning. What we called "learning" here not only just means accepting information; it is a complex course which includes several aspects: logical thinking, analysis, creative problem solving and est.—all of those are basically life skills we should familiar with. Nowadays, a worldwide trend of life-long education attracts each one's attention. It depends on the processes of self-learning, which enhance the requirement of high level learning abilities, the most outstanding one of which is critical thinking.
Critical thinking as well as analysis is the keys for us to realize the unknown world; to mouse out the truth of a business; to introspect and improve ourselves. Sadly, these abilities can hardly be gained through watching TV. Because each TV program has very strict limits on time, viewers always can not receive complete, unfiltered, and balanced information from it, let alone relying on TV to develop informed and intelligent opinions about important social and political issues. Thus, viewers nearly have no opportunity to train their critical thinking abilities through analyzing the facts showing in TV. Good books, on another hand, enable readers to get whole background of an issue and to review cross-reference material, which overcome the disadvantages of TV. By carefully comparing different standpoints of several writers, we may able to build up our own point of view. This process is an active training of creative thinking ability.
Moreover, reading books gives a lot of fun for readers than switching television channels, or even scanning a video library. Browsing among books allows for serendipity-unexpectedly picking up an attractive while searching for another one. This pleasurable sensory can not be easily substituted for many people--an experience who will miss forever.
In sum, television and video can be more efficient than books as a means of conveying current affairs, providing lively information of the world for children. However, books facilitate creative learning in certain ways that television can not. And reading books will ever play a crucial role in our process of education.
Argument2:
2.The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."
文中的逻辑是这样的,结论是we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting in order to raise property values,依据是Brookville's people这样做了然后average property values升了
Giving some facts about what the Brookville community have done, the author alleges a between the raising of average property values with adopting a set of restrictions. Although it is credible on the surface, closer examination will reveal the hidden flaws as follows in his/her reasoning.
Primarily, whether setting restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted caused the increasing of average property values in Brookville is kept unknown since that no evidence shows other alternative possibilities have been ruled out. It is widely held belief that increasing of average property values could be attributed to complex reasons. For instance, with the resuscitation of the whole country's economy government could provide more investments on basic equipments such as speedway, railway and new havens in local areas like Brookville. These investments allure enormous architectural contractors, thus creating hundreds of new work opportunities for local persons. Besides, exploit ting mineral resources will also brings the town millions of dollars. In addition, the new techniques rolled out from the local universities may contribute to the continuing growth of the local economy, thus enhancing the increases of average property values. Without taking this case into consideration, the arguer's conclusion is unconvincing.
Next, granted that adopting restrictions do help B to improve its average property values, to assert that it will also work in D. In other words, different nature conditions and customs prevent the same method from being suitable for two areas. Local people in D may prefer having various styles of houses instead of the same types. And huge of buildings in D maybe the traditional ones which have specially historical values: for example, the old church standing from more than one hundred years; the library used as harbor during the World War Two; the former residence of a famous writer or politician. Printing them with the same color will totally destroy their fascination and hurt citizens' feeling. Thus, the auger assumes without justification that the background and conditions have remained the same for the two places.
In addition, I wonder that setting restrictions will be as useful as it was seven years ago. The world changes so fast that we can hardly rely on our previously successful experience. Not only in technique field but also in business circles, completely believing past experience always leads to fail. IBM insisted its old useful business mode and left the tremendous PC market to Microsoft. And Microsoft was forced to develop IE and MSN by the trend of Internet which leads by companies like Yahoo and Google. So, the auger unfairly assumes that the old method would be of use after several years and the conclusion based on it is unwarranted.
In sum, the argument is unconvincing since it is standing on questionable assumptions. To strengthen it, the author must provide strong evidence to assure us about the assumptions which have been described above. |
